I’m talking cheap-ass store-brand diet cream soda, 2 bucks for a 12 pack. ‘Chek’ brand from Winn-Dixie, to be specific.
Thanks for the memories…
As a small child, “holidays” to me meant some kind of whisky “dribbled” into cream soda.
This was the first step towards watered down wine, and what lay ahead…
BTW, what bourbon do you speak of? (I’m still partial to bourbon myself)
If you are putting a quality bourbon into diet cream soda, I’m gonna scream. 10 High - ok. Booker’s - not ok.
Evan Williams.
I’m partial to Knob Creek.
i don’t think i’ve ever seen the word ‘quality’ modify the word ‘bourbon’ before.
but hey, thats what teh straight dope is for, yes?
and if you’re looking for a good drink that’ll make your tender go “whaa?” ask for a creemore float.
3/4 pint creemore (or another good lager)
one scoop vanilla (*not!! french vanilla) ice cream
and top the pint w/ ginger ale.
mmm^mm
There are a lot of good bourbons. Knob Creek, as mentioned. Maker’s Mark. I don’t know what you’re talking about, I guess. There’s good Bourbon and bad Bourbon, just like any liquor.
Please don’t do that to good Bourbon. Evan Williams, OK.
My favorite Bourbon drink is Bourbon.
sorry, chalk it up to regional bias, i guess. here in the centre of the universe we drink rye whiskey. occasionally scotch. but bourbon? on a dare maybe. wouldn’t be caught buying the stuff though.
Lately, I like Scotch better than bourbon. Johnny Walker Black is dangerously potable. Thank god I can’t afford to have it that often.
Sometimes I wonder if I had more money that that would help me become a raging alcoholic. Ironically, it’s usually the times of having less money that makes me want to drink more. So there’s kind of self-limiting system place, sort of.
Did you ever try Glenmorangie? That is ambrosia to me. Price in the US is ridiculous though. Sobering.
When I go to UK I bring Knob Creek, and take Glenmorangie back to US.
This is only tangentially related, but the other night I invented a tasty beverage that I was quite proud of: kaluha, rum, and Boyland’s cane cola. MMMMMM. I bet it would be even tastier with light rum.
Bourbon and cream soda. Hmmm…I can’t decide if that would heavenly or hellish. I bet it would be heavenly and encourage me to drink a whole lot of it, so maybe I shouldn’t try it.
And what’s wrong with using good bourbon in such a concoction? That’s like saying you shouldn’t use good rum in a cuba libre, or decent wine in a wine sauce. Good booze makes a better-tasting mixed drink than bad booze, so why shouldn’t you use it?
Cream soda you say?
How would you order cream soda and Knob Creek?
“Can I please have a shot of your Knob Cream?”
Well, there are two reasons. First, it’s a waste of good bourbon. Cream soda is very sweet, and you won’t really taste the bourbon any way. Certainly not the nuance. So why waste the money? It’s like ketchup on steak. I am told some people LIKE it that way, which is there prerogative, but the fact is that they like KETCHUP, and don’t know if they like steak, because they aren’t tasting it. Sugar numbs your palette. It’s a fact. If you like sugar, eat sugar, but don’t waste your money on good booze or meat if you aren’t going to let yourself taste it.
Other mixed drinks may benefit from better booze, but cream soda is particularly sweet and flavorful. I happen to love the stuff, but I like my sweet sober and my alcohol straight.
Anyway, there’s a particular point here that good scotch and good bourbon is woody and smokey, and simply wouldn’t make a good mixer. Maker’s Mark is an exception, because it is mild, and it makes a great old fashioned. But that’s made with soda water and a little sugar, not a heavy creamy soda.
We’re probably not far from the Jack Daniels Is Not Bourbon No It Isn’t No It Isn’t rant that I get into with bartenders…
I haven’t really explored the world of single malts, but I suspect I may go in that direction… and not come back.
My husband was a JWB man until I converted him. Never heard of anyone going back once they go single malt.
Also, try Laphraig if you like “peat”. I haven’t acquired a taste for that yet - still seems like very expensive listerine to me.
That would be a great name for a cocktail - but a waste of Knob Creek.
I’m a purist with the good stuff. Neat. No ice ever! Water on the side.
What is the name for Bourbon and cream soda? The concept seems weird and scary to me.
You could call it a “Reverend Tim”…
