My new Honda CR-V (and a stereo question for the audiophiles)

So I picked up a shiny new 2003 Silver CR-V this week. Am I excited? Yes I am. Here’s some pics for the curious.

Overall I love the car – lots of room, handles well, and it gets very good gas milage for an SUV (an admittedly small SUV). I wouldn’t mind if the tires were a tiny bit bigger, but I can always change that later if I feel like blowing some money on something will little to no practical purpose.

The one thing I do want to work on though is the stereo system. The sound is passable, but it sounds kind of weak and muted compared to the “premium” system I had in my old car.

So what’s the easiest way to pump it up without affecting the appearance of the vehicle? Would an amp and new speakers (replacing the old ones) help? Would I need a whole new head unit? I’d like to avoid that if possible unless they’re making aftermarket stereos that look a lot less hideous than the ones I usually see in Best Buy. Do I need to stash a subwoofer somewhere? Help me, I know nothing!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Usually the speakers that come in the car are the cheapest junk the manufacturer could find. Start with replacing them first.

Next, I would look at an inexpensive, small equalizer. Easiest way to “shape” the sound to your preferences. I don’t know what the head unit you have is like, but I would assume it is sufficient. I totally agree with you on the looks of most of the new stuff out there. God-awful and tacky!

Have fun!

…but have you tried changing the levels on the stereo yet? You know, treble, bass, etc? Sorry if that’s a dumb question.

Another very happy CRV owner chiming in here. I love my baby SuV, it’s great

Good advice gatopescado, I’ll check into that.

OESGal, yeah but I can’t find a good setting.

Contrary - what year is yours? How’s it holding up? I assume pretty well if you love it.
