My Older Daughter Is Going To Los Angeles Next Month - What Should She Know?

Way to take a light joke and run it into the ground.

QFT. I live near the beach, and it’s usually ten degrees cooler here than it is a little farther inland. And @Velocity is correct. We had an unusually cold Spring this year. Made me very happy.

Don’t quit your day job.

If she’s going to be anywhere near downtown, I’d recommend going to the Bradbury Building. It’s been in a ton of movies and TV shows and is very, very cool. It’s also across the street from Grand Central Market, which is a lot of fun to walk around in. Lots of great food, too!

The Bradbury is very interesting if you are into architecture but they don’t let the public go above the second floor unless you are there for some kind of business, as it is an active workspace. It is near Angel’s Flight and Grand Central Market, and there is some other reasonably historic buildings and places often used in film like the Bunker Hill Steps around just within walking distance of Civic Center/Grand Park and Pershing Square stations so she could definitely make a few hours of it at least, or a whole day with also going to Chinatown. Just don’t go walking too far to the southeast of downtown; if you walk past the Los Angles Mission or the police headquarters, you’ve gone too far.

That makes sense. I haven’t been there in ages when you could wander freely.

Oh, yeah. Too bad, though, that the Kosher Burrito is gone – that was definitely an L.A. cultural experience!

Kosher Burrito is gone but you can give this a try:

Tommy’s!

What?

It’s been a couple of years since I last went to LA, but whenever I asked someone how long it would take to get from Point A to Point B, the answer was always something like, “either 45 minutes or four hours, and you won’t really know until you actually get on the freeway(s).”

I’m pretty sure the answer would be the same if you’re using Uber or your own car, so I’d encourage your daughter to be very flexible in scheduling what she wants to see on any given day.

Also get used to conversations that sound like you’re doing algorithmic topology: “You just need to take the 5 to the 110 then west onto Wilshire through K-Town and then cut up on San Vicente. Else, you take the 134 to the 2 and wrap around down to Silver Lake, then follow Alverado south down to Beverly and go west. If you try to go up the 101 to Santa Monica you’re going to get stuck in traffic.”

Thanks a lot for your answers.

I have tons of unexpected work, I’ll take the time to read them as soon as I can. In the meantime, I may have more details about the trip.

“Stuart?! What are you doing here???”

If it makes you feel better, out-of-towners often seem to be able to navigate LA without a car better than most of us who have lived there all/most of our lives. Most of us never learned how to use public transportation either here or anywhere else. The idea of not having a personal car to get from point A to point B scares the Hell out of us. I’m not saying it’s easy, but with the proper amount of homework (which most Angelinos have never done), it is possible to rely on public transport to get you to any place of interest.

I’ve attended two Computer Conferences hosted at the Biltmore.

There are restaurants close by. We were told to always go in groups of three or more people.

Be extremely careful carrying a wallet. I left mine in the hotel safe. Carried my ID and one credit card to the restaurant. I left two credit cards at home. There was no need to travel with 4 cards.

The Biltmore Hotel is gorgeous. It was showing some age on the carpets and the basic rooms are small. Couldn’t afford a suite. I’ve heard it’s been renovated.

Apparently not much has changed with security.

I think the relevant thought is, “LA is two hours from LA.”

We know that the daughter declined an airport pickup. IMO a bad choice but there you are. But a common joke made in the Overheard LA instagram account is how many sacrifices one might make for a friend. Donate a kidney? Yes. Loan a thousand bucks? Sure. Give them a long term place to say? No problem. Pick them up at LAX? Hard no.

I’ve picked up dozens of people from LAX and it’s not that big a deal. It’s close to two freeways and a few relatively uncongested beach towns where you can hang out. Dodger Stadium or anywhere in Hollywood would be the hard nos for me.

You try to take the 101 to Santa Monica and you’ll be thirty miles in the wrong direction. The 101 doesn’t go anywhere near Santa Monica.

“Well…um…you can’t get there from here.”

“There is no there there.”

That idiot woman from New York did not know what she was talking about.

Actually it’s the opposite. In LA the everywhere is everywhere. Which can make it kind of hard to spot since it’s spread so evenly.
