Nope, I just have to listen to the King of hip hop/rap (same thing) and know that it is crap.
Who the hell is the “King of hip hop” and what does he have to do with you being an idiot?
There’re only two genres of music in the world: good music and bad music. Everyone has their own opinion about which is which, but only mine is correct.
All right, glad someone decided to flame me for no really good reason - the first time is cool, but when it becomes a pileup, it’s kinda dickheaded. The fact of the matter is I HATE punk, except for the Ramones - regardless of whether it’s “hardcore” punk or “pop” punk or “independant” punk or “melodic microtonal Afghani” punk. In fact, I never made personal value judgments on how GOOD the music was, nor do I claim to be an “expert” on music. I was complaining that I have a pretty limited grasp on music and yet these people still say things that repeatedly go against ACTUAL classifications and in some cases, common sense.
To all of the people who somehow thought my own musical tastes were hidden within my post: you’re fucking morons who not only try to read into things, but do it WRONGLY. I love Green Day, I was objecting to its classification as “real punk” (although admittedly, I didn’t like the song “Minority,” which is the one he played). So where the fuck do you get off, assuming that just because I know the difference between pop punk and “real” punk, I’m some kind of arrogant asshole who derides people for listening to music that more than fifteen people actually like? The only arrogance I see here is assuming based on one’s knowledge that they must be some kind of underground music fanatic. Nothing could be more presumptious.
Right there.
blink Might I remind you that I don’t think “real” punk is BETTER than “pop” punk, and when I brought up the distinction in the first place, I stated that the “real” punks (who I consider to be assholes following a dead movement) believed it?
Eminem you idiot, and I’m not the one being an idiot. Did you ever actually open your ears and listen to that garbage? Then you would realize that’s it not good.
Well sorry if I get confused with all your blathering on about real punk who you consider to be assholes following a dead movement and all.
My point is, your friend might be like that, but it takes two to tango.
I could be wrong though, I’m just a stupid metalhead, what do I know.
I don’t actually listen to or like punk rock (well, except for The Clash because they happen to be very eloquent and at least marginally musical), but if you want to be anti-establishment which is what punk started out as, I don’t see how you can be that and belong to the establishment that you are supposed to be raging against. Get over yourownself.
When did Eminem ascend the throne?
I’m sure millions of people disagree that his music is garbage.
It’s in the ear of the beholder.
I’m sorry, I have no idea what the hell you were trying to say in that last post, unless you’re honestly trying to say that one sentence with parentheses confused you. And my friend might be “like what?” Vagueness, la la. Finally, that last sentence was just fucking stupid - I never said that people who have different musical tastes are dumb. But if someone were to come up to you and claim Megadeth to be death metal, Opeth to be NWOBHM, or Korn to be thrash, wouldn’t you try to set them straight?
It’s not your taste in music that makes you an asshole, Icebrand, it’s the way you use your highly specialized and functionally irrelevent knowledge of musical genres to belittle people you ostensibly consider to be friends.
I always thought he was the big one. Oh well. I guess I just like less clashing type music. Music that doesn’t drive me up the wall.
World Eater, I appreciate your belief that musical quality is subjective. That’s not something I’m arguing against. However, it does seem to me a bit hypocritical that you seem to accept someone saying X band/artist is “good” because that’s subjective, but if they say it’s “bad” rather than the more proper wording of “I personally don’t like it,” you get up-in-arms and attempt to defend the subjectivity of it all. Relax.
(note: I sent this message right after the last one I sent, so if you sent one in between, this is not a reply.)
Miller. I think that general knowledge is a good thing. I’m not berating people for not knowing who the original lineup of Iron Maiden was, or whatever you think I’m doing. I just feel that genres should be pretty common knowledge. I’m not attempting to berate anyone, only inspire a curiosity as to what the true meaning of whatever-genre is, since virtually all I know about music is genre, basic music theory, what-band-did-what-song, and trivia about my favorite bands. I’m not sitting around going "I can’t fucking BELIEVE your favorite band used a major second interval instead of a minor third there, how the fuck can you listen to this shit?
OK, just to identify my position, I hate punk, most rock and roll except the Eagles, and virtually every type of music since about 1977. I love classical, jazz, and Steely Dan.
I find this intriguing:
Is there possibly something in this? I know Elvis is the King [of Rock & Roll] and all, but is it possible that heavy drums ARE a legitimate characteristic of rock as we define it today, and Elvis does lean toward “white-boy blues” after all? Discuss?
(If my position statement in the first paragraph disqualifies me from asking this sort of question, please disregard.)
Masonite: My complaint about that particular statement is that at the time, what Elvis did was clearly thought of as rock and roll, and I feel that it is ignorant for someone to judge a music genre based on the standards that define it now, rather than contemporary standards. Of course your mileage may vary - someone could very well put forth a legitimate argument against my position on that, rather than the banal ad hominem attacks that plague this thread…
In my opinion, rock and roll is blues with enough soul removed to not scare the uptight folk. If you take all the soul out, you have country music. Besides, everyone knows that Chuck Berry invented rock and roll.
Which of the following statements could possibly display ignorance I would want to point out.
“De La Soul is some of the most amazing shit I’ve ever heard”
“How the hell could people listen to De La Soul? I hate that crap music”
The latter, I assume, because it says “how could people listen to…” which implies a nonsubjective lack of quality?
