Thanks for asking, Brynda, and thanks to everyone else for the additional suggestions. I’ll be making a ton of phone calls this week and will be physically in town next week to handle as much as I can in the time I am there. My mother is due to be moved to the facility this week and my dad next week after I arrive.
I’ve been given the contact information for a couple companies in their town who can help to arrange for the disposal of a lot of their possessions. I also got a suggestion that I might want to leave what good furniture they have in the house and sell it as partially furnished - since this is a small starter-type home (the only one they ever bought) that may make it attractive to a first-time home buyer. I guess we’ll see …
Looking at the complete picture is so overwhelming I need to remind myself to just take things one step at a time. This thread has been very helpful in making a checklist of things to be done.
I know you’re overwhelmed right now, you’re a stronger person than I for taking this on and I’m sure your folks really appreciate it, though they may no be able to show you.
One thing that might make things quicker for you is to scan your driver’s license and the POA then email it to yourself; that way you can forward it to whomever may need a copy (utility co, etc) and perhaps save yourself some trips. At the very least make an extra copy to have w/ you just in case.
