My PC contacts Microsoft each time I switch it on

I’ve just installed a new all-singing, all-dancing proxy server (url=“http://www.webattack.com/get/janaserver.shtml”]Jana Server) on our office LAN, it has a whiole bunch of logging and tracking features that the old one lacked.

It’s revealed that every time I start up my laptop, it contacts windowsupdate.microsoft.net and sends them two files; Drizzle.cab and Ident.cab.

I want this to stop, primarily because it’s making the proxy dial up unnecessarily (we’re still on ISDN dialup).

So, any ideas? (I suspect it will be a registry key or summat)

Found it

It’s the Microsoft Query Manager (you get this when you install the MSN messenger client.

I disabled it by running MSconfig and unchecking LoadQM in the Startup tab

Glad we could help…

I was just about to tell you to check that.

Really. I was.

Anybody know what info is being sent to Mr Bill in those two files?

It looks pretty dull stuff; it’s only text files (that look like old .ini viles) - some of it seems to be about what software versions I have, particularly internet apps.

(I used to wonder why my browser would take me to the M$ site to show me an advert every now and again, rather than my home page (About:blank), now I know)
