I first learned about the Pebble back in March, via an MIT Technology Review article: I’m not usually an early adopter for things like this, but for some reason the idea really struck a chord with me and as soon as I finished the article I pre-ordered one. I finally got the “you can order one for real now” email on Thursday, it shipped on Friday, and it arrived on Monday!
As I expected, it’s masculine and Dick Tracy-like on my not-very-feminine-to-begin-with wrist. I might try to find a replacement 22m watch strap that tapers and looks less ridiculous, but that might not really help much. In the meantime, it’s a good thing that I own my dorkiness.
I’m using Pebble with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, running Android 4.2.2. Connecting it for the first time took some doing: on Monday evening I could get it to pair but not connect, and after spending more than an hour with the online help and unpairing/re-pairing the Pebble I finally sent an email to tech support. The auto-reply said that they were very busy but would get to me as soon as possible.
I took it to work with me yesterday, just in case inspiration struck, and I managed to get it to work: I unpaired everything (both the phone from the watch and the watch from the phone), uninstalled the Pebble app, reset the watch to factory settings and turned it off, and shut down my phone. When I turned everything back on and installed a fresh copy of the Pebble app, it connected right away! SUCCESS! I was even able to download some custom watch faces (the default analog face is ok, but the one I downloaded is nicer – plus, I like to have the date displayed). I sent a “never mind” email to tech support. grin
Here are a few pictures, if you’re interested.
I’ve now been using it for almost 20 hours, and so far the only hiccup came this morning when I walked the dog and took my phone but not the watch: when it got out of Bluetooth range it disconnected, and I had to reinstall the Pebble app (again) to get it to reconnect. I need to do some research on that, and see if there’s a trick for easier reconnecting; it seems to be a known issue, because the release notes for the current version of the Pebble app include something about improved reconnections on Android 4.2.
Connection headaches and goofy appearance aside, so far I love this thing. I went out last night, and it was very cool to be able to leave my phone in my pocket (instead of keeping it out on the bar) and get “stealth” notifications of emails, text messages, and phone calls.
Does anyone else have one?
