My poor kitties

And me too, I guess.

We moved to Boston just over a week ago and they are not doing so well with the adjustment just yet. They had the run of a huge three-story house and are now confined to about 650 square feet (where they are not really supposed to be).

No real windows to look out of and chirp at birds, no stairs to thunder up and down, no long hallways to chase the laser pointer. I think they are bored out of their kitty brains and the worst part is that they want to sleep all day and romp all night. That’s probably due to the long drive here when they were stuck in their carriers during the day and did indeed go ape at night.

I’d take any suggestions out there. We are house hunting furiously but the reality is they will not ever be in that large of a house again. How do those of you with small apartments help your kitties stay sane?

I have about 900 sq. ft, about 1/3 of it that is not used. We have five cats. Sometimes we just put a paper bag or a shoebox on the floor and they amuse themselves with that. Also, those little inflated plastic bags that come with some deliveries…we call 'em “kitten bags”. They bat those around too. They are less inclined to play with real toys than they are packing materials.

Also, our cats jet around the house all the time. Yours will as soon as they feel ‘at home’ with the new digs. Good luck!!

They will adjust in a week or so. When we moved the cats were all out of sorts. We even found them kitty piling together which they never did before. It was almost like they were moral support for each other. They did not know the new place but they knew each other.

Give it time and they will be okay.

Heh so what you’re saying is just about the time they finally adjust to this apartment, we’ll get to go through it all again when we buy a place here . . .

Oh yay.

Feliway pheromone diffusers are a great way of soothing feline nerves.

Even though they aren’t peeing where they shouldn’t? They’re mostly unsettled, crying and such. No litter box issues (yet).

Inappropriate elimination behaviour is one way that anxiety can be expressed by a cat. If you have a situation in which a cat(s) appear “unhappy”, Feliway can work wonders.
