My poor puppy! aka dogs and pulled teeth

Today my dog went in to get a tooth pulled. Contrary to the thread title, my mini dachsound is almost 12 years old. Old puppy, but still a puppy in my mind.

Anyways, since he was already going to go under to have the tooth pulled (infected), we decided to have his teeth cleaned too. After pulling the tooth and cleaning the rest, they found a bunch of other teeth that needed to be pulled. So now my poor dog only has back teeth! Almost all of the front ones are totally gone.

He was really out of it last night because of the painkillers, but was quite happy to see me come home to see him.

I know, it is mostly our fault that he lost his teeth. We never brushed them to begin with, and since he was so old we didnt want to risk putting him under to have them cleaned. We tried feeding him treats that would clean his teeth, but that didnt work too well, to say the least. The next dog will be toothbrush trained, to prevent his inevitable toothlessness.

Poor little guy! I love dachsunds, when I’m finally able to get a dog I want to get a couple of those.

Our cat Seth got two teeth pulled about a week ago, along with a cleaning. He’s only two years old, but we just got him about two months ago. He was neglected before he came to the shelter, his fur was so matted they had give him the “lion cut” where they shave everything but his head, tail, and feet. His other teeth look good though.

The poor guy yowled the whole way to the vet, where he had to stay all day, only to have his chin shaved and teeth pulled. His blood sugar was very low (he’s diabetic) - he doens’t mind though, because that just means he gets extra food and usually no shots.

He looks ridiculous, with his little bald chin with orange fur puffing out around it.
