Almost everything. There’s a site out there somewhere (I forget what it is or where I heard about it, unfortunately) that details everything that’s in there and what it does and if you need it.
Just run MSConfig and Google everything that’s turned on. You can turn most of it off, and you’ll run more smoothly. Just make sure that after you go to the “startup” tab and turn it all off, you go back to the “General” tab and choose “Selective Startup” so that you get the benefits of what you’ve done.
Okay, I decided not to be so lazy. Here’s the site I was talking about, hands-down one of the most useful web sites I’ve ever come across. It looks a little intimidating, but everything is explained. And this is the list alone. Check everything running on startup against this list and turn off everything that’s not essential.
I know, I know, I’m pathetically out of date, but how do I turn it off in Win95? When I type msconfig in ‘Run’, I get “Cannot find the file ‘msconfig’ (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.”
I’ve always just manually closed the start center after each reboot.
GilaB, Windows 95 didn’t come with msconfig, but you can get it: http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Msconfig.htm
Or, this link is to a program called Startup Control Panel, which will accomplish the same things for you (look at the screenshot, you can see the Startup tab that was mentioned above): http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
Once you get either of them installed, you will have access to the Startup Menu and can stop things from starting. Each individual User has his own Startup deal, so if you have more than one User, you’ll have to set the preferences from each User’s screen separately.
Seriously? I got so mad at RealOne that i deleted the whole thing, and just use Windows Media and Quicktime! It would open itself when Wiindows Media was playing CDs was running and, made the computer crash.
