My Republican friends need to pace themselves

It’s been…4 days? I don’t need to know after signed every executive order how much Joe Biden didn’t magically fix everything yet or how every policy decision that doesn’t involve kowtowing to Big Oil or placing a former Goldman Sachs exec in a position they are unqualified for is “destroying the economy with Socialism”.

You have Republican friends?

Why?

To be…fair(?), they need to keep the momentum going even after their Great Orange Hope has ensconced himself at his Mar-A-Lago estate after humiliating himself and running away like a coward instead of graciously conceding and challenging Biden to a rematch in four years. It is hard to maintain a movement when your leader pouts like a four year old who has dropped his ice cream cone.

I don’t even care for Biden that much or consider him the third best candidate to elect, and yet he and his administration are still such a breath of fresh air that I’ve gained two additional hours of sleep at night. I’ve never been inclined to watch White House Press Briefings as regardless of political affinity they are largely exercises in propaganda, but watching Jen Psaki present essentially competent and honest pressers is remarkably comforting compared to the inept shitshow of attempts spin doctoring of the previous administration.

I’m under no illusion that Biden is going to come it with a miracle fix for the pandemic or the economic tsunami that is coming, but at least I have the impression that sensible adults are in charge (as much as anyone is in charge of the economy) and will take reasonable and thoughtful actions to ameliorate the worst of what is to come, and maybe even undertake efforts for effective change to address structural changes in fundamental challenges in economics, employment, and pandemic surveillance.

Stranger

Earthworms cost money and sometimes they’re good for the soil…?

Yes, that does seem to be the case.

There is some hope for that possibility, although those actions will likely be stymied in Congress if they require legislation.

I am convinced this is so close to impossible as to be indistinguishable from it.

Some of my right-wing relations are busy trolling the White House social media feeds (and not in a particularly interesting way) and claiming that Kamala Harris is literally the Whore of Babylon. The others have gone back to posting endless pictures of flags and soldiers.

There appears to be, amongst the more hardcore righties of my acquaintance, a desperate need to find a narrative that allows them to continue to feel morally superior to liberals in the aftermath of their beloved leader actively supporting a terrorist attack on the Capitol. They’ve spent the last year going on about how violent and lawless the Left are, and they’re still adjusting to the reality of what their side have been doing all along.

Sadly, I suspect their “adjustment” will ultimately be to pretend that the whole Capitol thing wasn’t a big deal and LOOK OVER THERE - ANTIFA!.

Sadly for them the only salad they’ll ever be found near is ‘word salad’…

Between the Insurrection and the Inauguration my brother (also me and my siblings) were posting lots of anti-Trump stuff on Facebook. He has a few conservative friends who would pop in to ask why he was so obsessed with Trump, since he was only going to be president for a few more days. (I amused myself by ripping them to shreds, at which they would get all butthurt since they were “being polite” even though they were basically trolling us.)

Then after the inauguration my brother posted a positive post about Biden and one of them popped in to say something negative. I don’t know what it was since my brother finally lost patience with them and deleted it. But these guys I’m sure are even more obsessed about Biden than we were about Trump.

Yeah, the usual suspects at Faux News didn’t wait a nanosecond before trying to ramp up the outrage over Biden’s handling of COVID. Otherwise, they are flailing around trying to make their usual tired talking points stick (Rolex and Peloton, anyone? Coming on the heels of Trump? Really? REALLY?).

It really is fascinating that people still eat that sh*t up. I really struggle with falling into using terms like “mental illness”, but it is a struggle.

Moderating: This belongs more in P&E, where political jabs are allowed.

We fact-checked many of the statistical claims Biden made in the speech – and found Biden was highly factual, though there are some nuances worth noting.

What difference- a speech in which the fact checkers dont wear out their fingers with “pants on fire” results every paragraph.
