I had a cat with feline leukemia; caught it at age 10 between moving to a new area and getting the locally recommended vaccination, which the vet. in the previous area hadn’t mentioned (to be fair, this was about 30 years ago.) Vet. gave him prednisone near the end, telling me he might get a few days’ good time remission.
He went into remission for three years; and showed no sign of knowing he was sick for nearly all of that time. (When it came back, we tried the prednisone again – he’d been off it for most of the three years – and that time got the expected result, a day or so of returned appetite.)
That was a really unusual case; I’m not saying it’s at all likely to happen with Jasper. And there are reasons not to give prednisone, also. But it might be worth discussing with your vet.
Jasper has essentially stopped eating, but he’s still drinking water. His back legs work sometimes–just barely. Then last night he peed on our bed, so we were doing laundry until 2 AM.
I think he needs to take “that ride” to the vet tomorrow.
I lost it this afternoon and cried for a while.
We will have him cremated and then take him home to AZ for burial. He will be placed with the box holding his brother’s cremated remains. The two of them will be together again.
I hope I remember to ask the vet if the Leukemia virus leaves any residuals in the home and if so, how long do I wait before bringing a new cat?
@VOW , you know I love you too pieces.
I feel terrible you’re going through this.
Feel loving (((hugs))) from your sister.
I told Bear and Meeko about Jasper. They purred their condolences.
Grieve well.
Speak of it when you can. We’re all here.
I thought Harvey would get a shot for his sudden respiratory problem and be fine. He died at the vet’s, and I wasn’t there for him. We couldn’t let Creamsickle linger, so we took her in mid-day. We weren’t there for her. We let Tonka linger too long. Mrs. L.A. said, ‘Never again.’ But we were there for him at the end.
Mr VOW has returned from the vet. He said the vet examined Jasper, and determined his kidneys had completely shut down. It was absolutely the right time to say goodbye.
Mr VOW also took all the renal diet food we had not used. We wanted that to go to someone who has a sick kitty and can’t afford the expensive food.
Ohdear. I feel tears threatening, and I don’t want to cry any more! My head hurts enough from the crying jag I had earlier.
Goodbye, Jasper. You will always be my sweet baby boy kitty cat, and I’ll love you forever.
