I've had the keycat my entire membership here...it's time to say goodbye to her. [Goodbye]

Well, my cat is sick. Sick as in “I don’t think she’s coming back from this one” sick. While not verified yet, I can tell. I’ve had cats before and I’ve seen the signs many times.
And it’s to be expected, I mean, I first got her in 2004 and she was already a fully grown cat then. Fully sized adult, even a little pudgy in the middle. I’ve had her almost the entire length of my membership here.

For the last two years, though, you could tell she was getting old. The vets even confirmed she was almost totally blind two years ago and deaf in one ear. Since then, she started getting the cat version of dementia and all that. Usually spending most of her days wandering aimlessly around the house, or even in complete circles sometimes… going to random parts of rooms, like she got lost. Meowing often, like she was lost or didn’t know where she was. Not an “I’m hurt/in pain” meow, just a curious “Where am I?” meow that grew more and more questioning throughout the months. She also started to rarely leave the living room, where her bed is. Last year and half, she’s lived exclusively from her bed to her bowl and not much else, where as she used to follow a person all over the house and love to explore, even an area she explored a thousand times already.

Anyway, last few months, she’s started throwing up more and more. Not being able to keep food down. Having kitty accidents around the house. Eating less and less. About six months ago her back legs started to go. Couldn’t really get them to work well any more. We took her to the vet who said it was just really bad arthritis and also confirmed she was totally blind now, almost fully deaf, and just …an old cat by now, although still seemingly in health that wasn’t bad. I always knew that she had to have been at least as old as 2 or 3 when I first got her…and maybe even as old as 4. That would make her 14 or 15 now, maybe as old as 16. About average for a housecat, I looked up.

Anyway, the last two weeks or so, she’s been throwing up a bit more. She’s still eating…which I take as a good since, kinda…but the last time she threw up (this morning), it was tinged with red. Blood, I assume. Usually it’s just white, but not any more. And her back legs hardly support her at all now. She’s going to have lost the use of them entirely in a month or so, if she lives that long.

Gonna take her to the vet again soon (as soon as I get paid again, because currently broke right now), and probably make the choice to put her down if it’s as bad as I suspect.

Ah, that’s terrible news, I’m sorry to hear that. Been there 4 times in the last few years. You know, if it’s as bad as you make it sound, you might wanna consider that there are vets that come to your house for that final visit. It has always been so much less stressful to have everything happen in a comfortable, familiar envoronment. As badly as my cats hated the car ride and the vet, it was the least I could do for them.

Truly sorry to hear it, even though it’s the inevitable cost of being owned by a pet. The very hardest thing is to let go when it’s time to let go, no matter how much it hurts.

When I moved East, I brought my Monster Baby with me on the plane, after slipping her a vet-prescribed sleeping pill.

My plan was always to get another pill, and mix it into one last tuna fish breakfast, so she could sleep through that last ride to the vet - she hated that ride more than anything, and I hated subjecting her to it. She threw a wrench in those plans by passing quickly, but at least she was able to do it where she chose to.

You’ve already done as much as anyone could be expected to do. Thank you for caring so much.

Oh I’m so sorry. Losing a pet can be as hard as losing a human relative. Maybe there will be something the vet can do though. Keep us posted.

I’m so sorry, Idle Thoughts. It does sound like she doesn’t have much quality-of-life.

It’s rough to lose a kitty. :frowning:

Oh Og, I’m so very Sorry!!!

If you can, make her comfortable… and block out time to stay with her next to her. Pay attention to her.
If this really is the end… this is the time for you two to say… good bye.

:frowning:

My sincere condolences on what you are going through. Pets are my favorite people, and I dread one day having to address the mortality of my two pups. I wish you peace, however it turns out.

Really sorry to hear that. If you need a loan until payday, let me know. No sense in her suffering.

Been there…will be there again. What a price we pay for love.

May you find peace when she is at peace.

This my friend. I would be glad to help as well.

You might also ask the vet for a payment plan for this one… Don’t let money be what keeps her miserable.

Please PM me.

I am so sorry for you both. Hugs from Oregon.

I’m not going to have enough to pay a loan back any time soon, but thank you for the offer anyway. Money is very tight for us right now, as FB friends of mine can verify. So I’ll just wait for now.

Mom (who I live with currently, because I help her with bills) is talking about trying to find a free vet just to put her down, but I want to be at least sure that it’s not something that isn’t just related to “old cat” first. If I knew/know it’s cancer or unfixable, I’ll be the first to say put her to sleep. But right now it’s not really certain unless she either seems to get worse or until a vet can actually look and say “yeah, she’s in pain/got unfixable problems”.

I am so sorry.

Hugs to you and to the keycat! (I call my cats that too)

So sorry to hear this. My 15 yo kitteh isn’t doing so well either, so I know how hard it can be. Please let us know what the vet says.

I’m sorry for you impending loss, Idle Thoughts. I agree that it sounds like the right choice is to ease her pain and let her go.

I’ve been there (far too many times). I’m so so sorry. :frowning:

Idle Thoughts, so sorry about your beloved cat. Like so many here, I understand your pain.

Enter the Flagon, thank you for that idea. I have a cat who I am afraid will need to be put down in the not-too-distant future, and the thought of his last experience being a trip to the vet (which he hates, of course) has been very depressing. I am very good at giving him pills, though, so I will talk to the vet about tranquilizing him before that last trip. (Damn, starting to cry just thinking about it.)

I know I run the risk here of sounding like a broken record, but many vets will come to your home for that visit and/or have a referral for one that will. So much less stressful than the dreaded car ride.

Condolences and best wishes!

I’ve had good luck with diet supplements for an older cat with joint issues. Apparently cats do much better with supplements than dogs or even people. The brand I use is called Dasequin – it’s a capsule that I open up and mix into her wet food. But yes, if the cat is blind, arthritic, and unhappy, then it may be her time :frowning:
