The only reason I say “apparently” is that I heard it from my mother, whose pronouncements should really be taken with a liberal grain of salt until indicated otherwise. I’m not saying I don’t trust her, but sometimes you just never know. However, I’m pretty sure she’s right on this one.
The first thing my mom told me as she walked in the door today (I’m at my brother’s) was: “Stephanie [my sister] is leaving us.” That could mean almost anything, from her going to the mall, to her going on a Third World missions trip, to almost anything else.
When she finally clarified what she meant (with a longish story about how she’d been accepted: basically a phone call and a confirmation email), I felt giddy. In August, my little sister will be going to the University of Toronto in the Faculty of Sceince, and despite my public face of not missing her at all, I will. That said, I won’t have to put up with Steph’s imitations of Mom, insistence on public displays of affection, plus all the other sibling rot. In fact, I may even have to break my long-standing code of not hugging her… long story, don’t ask.
My sister’s friend Kate is in the general area of Toronto, but since it became a mega-city, that isn’t worth much. Besides, I think she goes to Carleton University.
So does anyone have any tips on living in Toronto? Or indeed any experiences with the University of Toronto, or its Science faculty? (yes, I’ll show this thread to my sister) Please post them here! Thanks!
Yeesh. Could a mod please delete or close all my other duplicate threads on this subject? The Internet is being slow today. (as my brother told me earlier this afternoon)
Yes, Speaker… I just noticed that too. Now while we’re on the topic of correcting each other’s mistakes, did you men to close that [sub][/sub] pair or did you not?
For living in Toronto, have her check out Pi Beta Phi. http://www.pibetaphi-uoft.com/
Back in my day, they were really nice, fun folks with their heads screwed on straight.
Your sister’s friend lives in Toronto and goes to CARLETON?!?!?!??. That’s one hell of a commute. What does it take her, 5, 6 hours?
Toronto is ridiculously, insanely expensive for houseing. Advice is to live in rez or get a group of people together to find a house/appartment to rent, but from what I hear, don’t expect anything too fancy. You’re looking at a 1000$ a month for a 2 bedroom, easy. I don’t actually live in Toronto, but work there (wel, Mississauga, but what;s the difference?) and everyone I talk to about housing says its either expensive or crappy. So look early, and grab something good if you come across it ASAP.
U of T is a good school, and I know a lot of people who like it there, although it is REALLY big. I have known some people to be bothered by the “you’re just a number”-ness of the place, but obviously a lot of people don’t mind it. IIRC, the Sciences are at the Mississauga campus, and I think there is very little need to go to other U of T locations, which is good.
