My son, science and N Sync

Gotta second this thought. My kid listens to this stuff, along with Savage Garden, 98 Degrees, and the Monkees. She’s on Honor Roll and she wants to be an engineer. I don’t think her musical preferences are necessarily indicative of who she is, any more than my old Herman’s Hermits albums define me. After all, I evolved into a professional who has NPR playing in my office and in the car - that’s gotta count for something, right??

To un-hijack a bit, I don’t see this as different from a planetarium that does Cosmic Concerts with all different kinds of music. And these institutions need to pay the bills somehow - N’SYNC seems harmless enough for that…

I actually don’t mind them too much really. Any band who produce quality acapella stuff have my respect.

I think they’re talented. But what does grate is the commercialism of it all. It’s quite ruthless and exploitive and aimed at a target demographic not really equipped to defend itself.

FTR I love opera and quite a number of very talented groups and performers. I also like pop groups such as Savage Garden. And I enjoy bubblegum music too - silly little tunes that make me happy and feel like dancing.

Okay. Okay.

I’ll give in to N’Sync being awesome dancers with awesome hair. But the singing? Naw. Can’t go there.

And if the museums need this type of frau-frau to remain open, I guess I can be magnanimous enough to accept that. But in doing so, how about letting me know when tripe of this sort is appearing so I can avoid it like the plague?

I’m with the Chief on this one. Not so much on the hating NSnyc thing – I don’t think I’ve ever even heard NSync, or if I did, I didn’t notice. I’m lucky when it comes to bubble gum bands – my 13 year old daughter is a maniacal country music fan and has listened to nothing else since age 7 and my son, like me, isn’t much into music at all. However, most kids do like this stuff, and that’s fine. It’s a kid’s job to disengage from his or her parents in adolescence and one time honored way of doing this is to like music that parents hate. That said I stand firmly with ChiefScott in feeling that an Air and Space Museum is no place for a movie about a bubble gum band. Even if it does bring kids in. After all, Chief brought his kid to the museum AND had him all jacked up about it. Kid friendly exhibits on museum related themes are fine. But this? It just seems wrong.

Just to dispel an untruth here, but I was looking at my sons NSync cd and JC Chasez is credited for writing a few of the songs. I don’t have it with me right now, but I believe it was like 3 or 4.

Also, I don’t think Elvis Presley wrote his songs.
