my summer sucks--or how I broke my hip

Now I don’t know if you did that on purpose–but I laughed out loud when I read it  I can feel your pain–that is what pisses me off about the beach thing. I haven’t been to the beach for 3 years due to other vacations, etc. So I was really looking forward to it. I think I might have got within 20 feet of it. I got to the hotel, walked up the stairs, tore my quad and broke my hip and then was off to the hospital. No beach…dammit, then eight weeks now at home, and now another eight weeks.

Holy cow! You must have a high tolerance for pain. Broken bones hurt!

Actually - have you consulted with anyone to find out why you broke your hip? Seriously - this is an injury most common among older women with osteoporosis. As a 50 year old male, you’re not in the expected demographic, and I’d worry there’s something else going on.

Or, you’ve been pulling our legs (sorry!) all this time and you’re really a retirement-age granny

Well I have a follow up appointment on Monday with the Sports Medicine Doctor and will ask him these questions again. But his take on it is that it is a repetitive stress injury, most likely from my interval running and just running in general. Both my wife and I were worried that it was some bone density issue but we both asked him separately and he told us both the same thing.

You know the funny thing is that right now I am in less pain then before. The quad injury hurt a lot more when it was healing, but then again I was working through a quad injury with a broken hip. So the small pain I feel now is a piece of cake! Guess it is all perspective right? But I am glad I am on the mend–I am feeling much better.

No fun. Sending out a wish for a speedy recovery!

Here is the story of a high school girl who broke her leg in the State Cross Country Meet. (Includes video on page, might be disturbing to some.)

She started the race with leg soreness that turn out to be a stress fracture. She suffered several breaks in the last 400 meters and crawled the last 45 feet.
:eek::eek::eek:

wouldn’t recovery go better if you could rest your hip on the beach?

i hope things go well and everything heals up just right.

WOW!! I don’t even know what to say—that girl is amazing. Now I feel like a wimp  I never figured something as simple as this started out to be could get so screwed up so fast. My initial injury was just a little leg soreness too–but damn I didn’t crawl. Poor girl. But I like her spirit and that is what you have to do–just keep moving day by day. I wouldn’t want to use a wheelchair either.

But I will tell you that this has given me a much greater appreciation for ADA and Handicap issues. As an Architect I have always been concerned about access–but living it, you realize how difficult it is for some people.

My wife is getting me coffee each morning and our barista this morning told her that she has another customer where the wife has the exact same injury and that originally it was the torn quad and now she is going to have her hip fixed. I am going to ask the Doc how common this thing is.

rocking chair–the beach huh? hmmm.wonder if I can get my wife to buy into that!

I’ve broken more than 30 bones (but no major ones) over the years, including a few stress fractures, and every one of them has been moderately painful. To be walking, even hobbling on a broken hip along with all your other activities has earned you major toughness points.

Take the recovery easy, stay as active as you can through the fall and winter and then ease into your efforts next summer.

Heal well.

 How in the world did you manage that?
