I loved the show and they were even better than I
expected. The stage show is impressive, with 2 screens on
either side, and a backdrop with different designs on it. At
one point they had a couple of black balloon clusters in the
back too. Maynard was on the a platform on the left of the
stage which was also a display screen, showing what was on
above as he walked over it. He was painted blue and barely
wore anything as he pranced around moving like a
contortionist. At one point he screamed for what seemed
like an eon.
Also there were wires that lit up which mimicked electricity
and a huge disco ball above the soundboard which lit up the
whole arena. Shiny glitter dropped from the sky during the
Patient which added to the strange aura of the evening.
There were videos and bizarre video clips playing throughout
the show, and they never showed the band on the big
screens.
The level of musicianship was really fantastic, so every song
was done well. Highlights for me were Parabola, aenema,
and Reflection , where they brought out a 2nd drum kit and
just jammed like mad! I also was surprised that Maynard
played guitar on a few songs!! My favorite song was 46 & 2,
accompanied by a creepy video.
He thanked us for our support several times and also
insulted Sacramento. At another point he asked everyone
who was from Arizona to raise their hands ??!
The funniest thing he said was while introducing the other
drummer as the former manager of Bang Tango and
currently auditioning for keyboardist for the Duran Duran
reunion!
This show was awesome, and now I really see why they are
one of the best bands of the past 10 years. I only hope
they play longer and maybe throw in a couple of covers next
time.
Was this right before they played Aenema? 'Cause that would make some sense, what with the anti-Californian lyrics of the song refering to “Arizona Bay” - courtesy of Bill Hicks, of course.
There are few things that rock so hard as seeing TOOL play Aenema live.
yeah i believe so… that song was really great live. someone compared them to pink floyd and after seeing the show i could see how that is a good comparison, since they have strange visuals and sometimes have a spacey sound.
saw em play in San Francisco a few year ago. Fantastic show, even if they never did turn the lights on. Just black lights and Maynard was painted blue.
Would see them again if they came close by…(I live in the middle of nowhere)
Glad you enjoyed them, cheif. I have seen them in concert twice. Both shows were utterly remarkable. I will be seeing them on the 21st here in Denver. This show will undoubtedly be incredible.
Pretentious? Man, they have got me fooled. Parabola is one of the most beautiful/meaningful songs I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. (If you haven’t followed along with the lyrics, you really should. Lateralus lyrics here )
Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified.
Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious.
Tool doesn’t demand any distinction, Adam Jones said in a guitar world interview that he’ll go into the crowd before a show and people wont recognize him, he thinks it’s cool. Most people wouldnt recognize a member of Tool if they walked up to you and slapped you in the face. Yet they demand an unjustified position of merit?
