My turn looking for a British delicacy - Camp Coffee!

well, I’m sitting here in the 30° C heat, drinking my iced Camp Coffee. Found it at a Safeway on the second go, in the (where else) coffee section.

As a cold drink on ice, it’s not too bad. I’ll try it in the recipe from Jamie whatsisname (just to annoy Don’t Ask ).

KatieCats, thanks for the suggestions - was going to try those two shops if Safeway didn’t come through.

I seem to recall that they had to change the label a little while back. The orginal one showed a scene from the days of the Raj with a Sikh servant giving his Scottish military boss a cup.
Now it shows them both sitting down and “enjoying” a cup together.

Label No. 1: Sikh servant with tray

Label No. 2: Sikh soldier standing, sans tray, while Scottish soldier hogs the Camp Coffee all to himself, the sod!

Label No. 3: Racial harmony: Sikh and Scottish soldier share a comradely cup of Camp Coffee.

It was suggested that this was a sop to the PC brigade. I think it is merely a reflection of the burgeoning relationship between the two men.
First it was master/servant, now a meeting of equals and next we’ll be treated to some hot kilt-on-turban action, it is the 21st century after all.

Perhaps not so far off, considering that Major-General Sir Hector Archibald MacDonaldis said to have been the model for the Scottish soldier on the label

Chicory can be found in the coffee aisle of most southern grocery stores. Within the past couple of weeks, I’ve seen it at Kroger and Food Lion.

It’s horrible by itself, but gives a full bodied smoothness (hard to explain), to low quality grocery store coffee.

Maybe it’s just the 30°, but I’m on my second mug of this stuff this afternoon, and on ice, it’s not too bad.
