My TV picture is bigger than the screen

I’m guessing this means my TV is making a long, slow decline towards dying. Here’s the deal:

The picture on my television now bleeds off the screen. This is really only a problem on channels that have a crawl across the botton or sports shows when the score is at the very top or in the corner. Those parts of the picture (probably an inch and a half) are just off the screen. I can’t read the “bottom line” on ESPN2 at all anymore.

So, is this a problem with my television or with the cable? Something that can be fixed?

It probably can be adjusted but it depends on the set and if it has nice accessable potentiometers. My WAG is something in the circuits that drive the yoke, the big coil of wires around the neck of the picture tube. Don’t attempt this yourself unless you are familiar with electronics and understand the risks involved. TVs, anything with a CRT for that matter, have very high, potentially deadly voltages that can be present even when they are unplugged.

It’s likely a problem with your TV. Back in the “olden” days, TV sets used to have adjustment knobs on the back for things like Horizontal Size, Vertical Size, etc. Now these adjustments are handled by electronic circuitry so that the user doesn’t have to mess with it. Unfortunately, if the automatic circuits start to fail, you get the results you’re seeing.

I have seen some sets that have adjustment screws on the circuit board for technicians to adjust. They would be labelled on the board as to their function, but be careful if you go poking around in your set. There are some pretty hefty voltages in there, even if the set is unplugged.
