Lately the myna birds we have here have been acting up, having lots of fights and the like. It’s not unusual to hear them squabbling and squawking at each other in the mornings and through the day. I guess it’s mating season for them right now, but I have no idea.
Today while I was leaving home to come to work, I looked down to see a ball of brown fluff huddled by our trashcan. It turned out to be one of the mynas, and it didn’t seem to be fully-grown; then again, it was huddling by itself, so maybe it just made it seem smaller. I’m guessing it was beaten up by the other birds.
I lined a box with paper towels and then added some pieces of bread, and put the bird inside. He didn’t seem to make a fuss of being picked up. I didn’t bring him in the house as we didn’t want to risk fleas, so he was in the garage. I told my grandmother to see if she could take him to the humane society to get him looked at.
Unfortunately that didn’t happen, but my auntie has bought a cage and food for it, and is gonna see how he fares. I’m hoping she takes him to the vet, but I have no other information at this time.
EDIT: My cousin who was visiting went and looked at the bird, and I was told it flew a little and also perched on his finger before being returned to the box. So it must be pretty okay to flutter about.
And here’s some pictures I took with my cellphone:
Adorable – read up on feeding and care, and you could have your own mimic bird! Very social, will replicate your voices, phone rings, etc. This is where my husband beats his head against the wall, because at this point it would be in a box with fluffy towels, have been named, and pretty much a member of the family.
I did draw the line at the nasty-tempered six foot king snake I wrestled out of the garage a couple of hours ago, though. He got a stern lecture, and taken out to the pasture.
Oh, I forgot to mention she’ll be taking it to her own house. I’d keep the little one if I could, but I live with my grandmother who wouldn’t want to keep it I’m sure. I moved in during my first year or so of college, and stayed after grandpa passed on to help around the house.
If I lived alone it would be in the same situation as you’d do: it’d be in fluffy blankets, named, and fed fruits!
BTW, I did as you said and researched care for it. It seems they can’t eat things high in iron. Learn something new every day.
I’m so glad you save that adorable little baby! Since the myna is a memeber of the starling family, you can find good info at Starling Talk and their message board. I have gotten very good information there in the past with two baby birds I have cared for.
Oh dear. I had only to read the title of your post and now Mendelssohn’s “Fingal’s Cave Overture” is running through my head and will probably be there for the next three days:
Da dee da da-da DAA dum, (beat: hop!), dee da-da DAA dum, (hop, hop!) . . . etc.
When my auntie came and picked him up, she tried to feed him and get him to drink. No go. So she took him home, and unfortunately, he passed away while he was at her house.
We don’t know why he passed away, maybe he had some sort of internal injuries, who knows.
