Mysterious canine respiratory illness sweeping the nation

Joe developed a weird cough the other day, and it sounds terrible. Seems unlikely it would be kennel cough, since his last daycare trip was early October and his only other dog contact is with the 2 next door through the fence. But I brought him into the vet yesterday, and they said there’s a really bad respiratory infection going around, and they put him on antibiotics and a cough suppressant.

I did a quick internet search today, and it looks like it’s all over the country:

It’s pretty shitty timing, right before Thanksgiving when we had family (and their dogs) coming to visit - and I’m sure that’ll be the case for a lot of others in the next week as well. Keep an eye on your furry ones, everyone!

Thanks for that.

I got Sam out early this a.m. Before we got rained out, he probably sniffed and greeted 3-4 dogs at a few fence lines.

I heard about this illness on the news when we got home.

I’ll be hopeful today and more careful tomorrow.

Our vet warned us about this earlier this week. She suggested a pause on visits to the dog park for a little while.

Yikes! Maybe this explains it! Gus has been coughing for about a month. The vet said it was kennel cough, and gave him a course of antibiotics, but the cough persisted, although it’s gotten a lot less frequent. He’s also hacking up, and lethargic.

My corgi has the occassional cough for no reason. He just had a checkup but I’m wondering if this is something I need to have the vet specifically look for.

Joe, Sam and Gus. Interesting…

I can’t speak for the others, but my dog uses an alias.

Witness Protection. I can’t say more.

Hey, I been looking for that dog!

A friend deliberately used one syllable names for dogs for easier command purposes.

<----- He’s right there
