Mysterious explosion-sound near Montréal?

Something going on in Montréal? My Facebook feed is starting to fill with stories like this and this.

From the reports of a bright flash and loud boom, it sounds like it could be a meteor. I hope someone got a video.

What is it with meteors/comets and high latitudes?

Montreal isn’t a particularly high latitude. London, Paris, Amsterdam and Spokane are all farther north than Montreal.

I wonder if it could be associated with Comet Ison?

Northern Hemisphere has a higher land : water ratio than Southern Hemisphere, and it’s much more densely populated. Russia and Canada being as huge as they are in area, it’s more likely that meteors would be observed there than in other countries.

No.

Comet Ison is to far from earth and won’t be coming close enough to have any effect at all.

Cool!

I don’t know about videos but I heard one woman interviewed on radio this morning who claims to have seen a bright flash in the sky. The boom was heard in eastern Ontario and northern NY State as well, so lightning seems implausible. Between 7:30 and 9:30 last night I was hearing my own sonic booms at a performance of the six Bach concertos by Ishai Shaer. My wife and I were in the first row and the piano pretty much dominated the small chamber orchestra.
