"Mysterious Skin" -- Read the book first or see the film?

This movie has been recommended to me on Netflix, and I was looking up stuff related to childhood sexual abuse (saw a movie on the McMartin case this weekend), and I also noticed it was based on a book.

For those who have seen and read both, which do you prefer/think I should start with? I usually try to read the book first, but lately I’m starting to wonder if that’s always the best idea.

Haven’t read the book, but felt the film’s strongest aspects were Levitt’s acting and the soundtrack rather than the script or story.

I recommend the film first, actually.

They’re both pretty grim. Both good, but dark. But the movie is a ninety minutes of grim, while the book just goes on and on and on. It’s a lot to take in. Having watched the movie first, it helped pace things out in my head. It made it more palatable.

I ramble and then I don’t make sense.

Film first. It makes the book much more poignant. Then, on second viewing of the film, you can catch all the subtle references to the detail in the book.

For those people that get it, it really, really smacks you in the head hard.

I barely remember, but I think I read the book first, but only after I learned Joe G-L would be starring in it, so I already had him in mind when I read it. I would still agree with y’all that seeing the film first only improves the (wonderful) book.

Now I’m torn. I have the book right here (picked it up at the library tonight), but if I go to Netflix, the movie won’t come till later this week. And it’s right heeeere…hmmm. Maybe I’ll just read a little off the top.

Do not deny the book. If it is not read, it will sneak up, and try and insert itself into your brain by whatever means it has.

This is not pretty.
