I was walking back to the office from a deli this afternoon and I saw four army helicopters flying low going straight down Fifth Avenue one right after the other. Never saw that before and I’ve been living in the big apple for over 20 years (the closest thing was hearing fighter jets patrolling the area shortly after 9/11). Later I thought I heard more helicopters while sitting in my office.
Military aircraft don’t use “N” numbers. IIRC, those are solely for civilian registration.
On Air Force aircraft, the tail numbers are XX-YYY. “XX” indicates the year the contract for that aircraft was signed, and “YYY” are the last 3 digits on the contract number (cite)
I’m not sure what system the Army uses per se, but it’s probably pretty similar. This site seemed to have promise. You might be able to find a particular tail number on it. . .
It was for Veteran’s Day. They got the proper clearance and everything. They went down that famous parade street (5th St.?)path, too. But they were told not to stick around for too long so people wouldn’t panic. John Scott from the Fox News Channel was in one of the choppers carrying his DV cam for some great shots. They did a spot on it.
