Mythology...teach me baby

No, but there’s Freyr who is a nordic god (has a twin goddess). I can’t believe he hasn’t stopped by yet.

Gods have a way of not being there when you need them and seldom clear things up.

My source for Norse mythology when I was a kid? Thor Comics

Read this and your other thread, jarbaby, and finally had the AHA!! moment I’d been wracking my brain for since yesterday.

Way back in elementary school I found in the school library a book which I subsequently re-read roughly every six months. I finally remembered the title:

Norse Gods and Giants, by Ingri D’Aulaire and Edgar P. D’Aulaire.*

While essentially a children’s book, I do believe it is fairly comprehensive and the drawn illustrations are magical. I still remember a great picture of Odin riding Sleipnir his eight-legged horse back from Hel, empty-handed after pleading for Baldur’s life to be restored.

I learned all about Yggdrasil, Asgard, Valkyries, Loki and Ragnarok… To this day, thanks largely to that book, I still know far more about Norse mythology than Greek or Roman myths (I do remember something about a pomegranate…).

Seraching just now for this book title led me to this page which is a listing of all Norse gods, giants, etc. Another page on this site is here, it contains a brief encaplulation of Norse Mythology. These pages are part of a large site concerning rune casting, it appears. [sub]I lost interest at that point.[/sub] There also appear to be some promising links to other sites on these two pages.

*I figure these are the same authors Cap’n Crude referred to, though not the same book.

Jarbabyj,

Drop me a line by email, I may be able to help. I’m currently the “norse/scandinavian/icelandic” chair of a circumpolar myth and tradition research team.

I have lots of references for you.

Bingo, Tygr, those are the folks. Definitely not the same book though.

I’m a trifle embarrassed to not recall this Hoenir chap, since I’ve always prided myself on a good general knowledge of all things mythological but not Judeo-Christian. Looks like I’m the one who needs to spend more time at the library. I have to wonder though: from Jarbabyj’s link, if they were so unhappy with Hoenir’s silence, why was Mimir the one whose head was sent back under separate cover from his body? Those wacky Nordheimers!

Superdude, say it with me: "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, …

“timid” “…perceived as arrogant”
Obviously I need a new PR agent.
