Good God, I hadn’t thought of those either. At least the goriest Hollywood gorefest is just actors and special effects. Pearl etc. are real people murdered live on camera and no way could I watch that.
They came in just before the scene and left just after. Being able to time it so precisely is even more disturbing if you think about it.
I didn’t notice any fapping. I also didn’t look for it.
Yeah, same. I used to go look at Rotten.com all the time, and they had some pretty gory true-life pictures. Those didn’t bother me that much. But video of real people being killed? No way no how.
I remember when I was a teenager the fad was those “Faces of Death” videos, which supposedly showed all sorts of gory things including real executions, murders, etc. I was never brave enough to watch them.
This is the reason why I had a problem with “Beyond the Mat” and had to leave. It was a documentary so I know some of it was staged, but the end of the movie was a wrestling match between “Mankind” and an opponent. The match was extremely bloody, and he was getting bashed with chairs, his head was bleeding profusely, and his whole face, hair, and chest were covered in blood. Meanwhile in the audience, his wife sat with his two small children (they couldn’t have been more than five years old–probably more like three or four) who were just freaking out watching their dad taking all this punishment. They didn’t know it was fake, so they thought their dad was getting destroyed up there. They were shrieking and screaming and their mom wasn’t doing anything about it except to make vague comforting noises. I’m not normally super-sensitive to kids’ problems, but those poor little kids looked like they were going to need years of therapy to deal with what they were seeing. Combined with the general depressing tone of the whole movie (wrestlers commit suicide a lot, many of them are drunks or druggies, they get paid very little and have lousy insurance so most of them except the “stars” are constantly dealing with injuries and can’t afford to take time off to rest…yeah, this is fun) I just couldn’t handle it.
agreeing with so many listed here. in my previous response I forgot to list “Boxing Helena” . could never pay me enough to watch that.
Oh, I hadn’t even considered non-fiction stuff. I think the Daniel Pearl video counts for me.
Another one here for torture porn.
Ok that didn’t come across quite the way I intended.
I have seen the Human Centipede just past the scene where the doctor explains his plan to the captives. I actually found that scene to be one of the best ‘horror’ scenes in a movie I’ve seen. It was made more disturbing because what my imagination conjured up was worsed than the filmed image of the three people.
In a related vein Hungry Bitches. No way, no how*.
Which reminds me of another shitty movie. The DaVinci Code. I would actually prefer torture porn.
*I do have 2 Girls on my phone. Shit like that has to be shared after all.
Meet the Feebles. I was half-tempted to list that movie as one of the reasons for my divorce.
Just kidding.
But not really.
Seriously? I think we’re wandering off into hyperbole again (see “Titanic” earlier). I saw “The DaVinci Code.” It wasn’t a very good movie, I agree. But you would prefer watching torture porn (which you already said you didn’t like) to watching it? I find that a bit hard to swallow.
This thread caused me to look up “Boxing Helena” again. I’ve never seen it, but I admit it looks kind of interesting (especially since it apparently isn’t at all gory). It was directed by a woman and apparently Helena has the upper hand (sorry) throughout the whole thing, even after she’s been amputated. And hey, I love Julian Sands. So I might just have to check that one out.
To me they are both examples of lazy film-making. Poor stories used to bolster the real reason for the movie. In one case gross FX, in the other the “OMG! Jesus had a kid it’s all true!” blood&grail hoo-hah of the time.
The big difference is running time.
And any documentary about evolution by Ben Stein.
Team America - Previews were enough to be certain it’s not my thing and I’ve never heard someone quote that movie that didn’t sound obnoxious.
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. For the same reason that I won’t watch The Human Centipede.
What reason is that? I can’t really think of anything the two movies have in common.
As I understand it, they both take recycling to the extreme. But I haven’t seen either one.
ooh, good point! I guess some people can be unnerved by radical models of sustainability.
