Name of "unnumbered end note" style?

I really should know this, or know where to find the info, but it’s eluded me.

Many books, especially those aimed at a popular or crossover pop/pro audience, use an end note style that omits markers or numbers in the text. Each note in the end is referenced by a short quote from the text. It’s all less efficient than numbers, but it allows careful citation without clogging up the main text and discouraging casual or popular readers.

Is there a formal name for this technique?

I don’t know if there’s a formal name, but when I was a copyeditor we just called them “page cites.”
