Splendor Hyaline - The chronicles of Narnia, and i believe it was spelled splendour hyaline
Fin of God - Small Gods (Discworld)
Bistromath - Douglas Adams
Guinivere One - Doctor Who
I thought the USS Abraham Lincoln was Pinkerton’s ship in the opera “Madama Butterfly.”
And the Busted Flush was the boat Travis McGee lived on in John D. MacDonald’s stories.
Sea Tiger was the submarine from Operation Petticoat.
Sleuth was the Hardy Boys’ speedboat.
How about Munequita? (It’s a Spanish word and should have a tilde over the n, but I don’t know how to do that.)
All the ones I know have been named already, but I can add a few:
Dutiful Passage
Teacher
Serenity (Hey, there’s gotta be at least one easy one, right?)
Covenant
City of Asgard
Streaker
I’m so happy someone got that!
Am I allowed to add one?
OK, in which work of fiction do we find The Patna?
I’d like to add one I’m surprised wasn’t mentioned already:
The Epoch
Without reading the whole thread, here’s what i got:
Cavorite Sphere–first ship on the Moon–H.G. Wells’ First Men in the Moon
R-XM–first ship on Mars–Rocketship-XM
USS Bozeman–Federation starship, *ST:TNG * episode ?
Busted Flush–houseboat–John D. MacDonald’s *Travis Mcgee * novels
USS Sulaco–Colonial marines starship–Aliens
USS Grissom–Federation starship, Star Trek III
And after searching through the thread,I’ll add a few more:
Demeter
Vulture
Seaview
Jupiter 2
Fish’s picks:
USNC Iroquois (hint: from a novel based on a video game; USNC stands for United Nations Space Command)
Tarantula (hint: 1879; it is the very model of the modern operetta)
The Slippery Pig (hint: video game)
Boise (hint: Qadgop should know this one)
The Moldy Crow (hint: video game; science-fiction first-person shooter based on a movie)
Asgard (hint: RAH)
HMS Indomitable (hint: the ship is sometimes called the Bellipotent because its editor was asleep at the switch; it is a book from 1891 featuring Billy and Claggart)
silenus’s picks:
Vrolijkheid
labtrash’s picks:
Karnak
Clark K’s picks:
Muñequita
Kat’s picks:
Dutiful Passage
Teacher
Serenity
Covenant
City of Asgard
Streaker
KarlGauss’s pick:
The Patna
bouv’s pick:
The Epoch
Dr. Rieux’s picks:
Demeter
Vulture
Seaview
Jupiter 2
Demeter is the Ship in Dracula.
Serenity is of course the ship in the Firefly movie of the same name.
From Fish’s hint, I’ll guess the UNSC Iriquois is from a Halo novelization.
I’ll add one: the USS Swinetrek
**Pigs…
In…
Spaaaaaaaace!**
Seaview is a submarine - Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Dutiful Passage sounds kind of like an Iain M Banks ship name (in which case it would be a starship) - Use of Weapons?
The RAH version of the Asgard is in *Starman Jones * and I would put **Gay Deceiver ** in *Number of the Beast * rather than The Cat Who Walked Through Walls.
How about:
The Nutmeg of Consolation
and USCGC Eagle:
Nutmeg of Consolation is a ship in a Patrick O’Brian book (good job, I was trying to come up with a ship from those books that I could be certain wasn’t based on a real one, but couldn’t).
You’re half right. It’s a starship, but not from Iain M Banks.
And Dr. Rieux’s Jupiter 2 is, of course, the spaceship from Lost in Space.
Streaker is the dolphin-crewed starship in David Brin’s Startide Rising.
Naglfar
The Vulture is from shortlived TV series Salvage 1 starring Andy Griffith.
Demeter, I think, is from The Cat Who Walks Through Walls
I’ll add:
Skylark
New York
Eagle
Gumdrop
Snoopy
