Here’s the gist of the experiment, I may be incorrect on some of the details: IIRC, there was a psychologist who did an experiment involving serial killers, non- serial killers, and a PET scan. A list of words was read to the subjects (cat, shoe, table, cookie), with an occasional emotionally charged work (murder, kill). He found that there was a small change in activity in the brains of the serial killers when the emotional words were read, while there was a large jump in activity with non-serial killers. Does anybody know the name of the psychologist? I tried Google-ing it, but didn’t come up with any useful results. Thanks.
Robert Hare?
I think that’s it- he fits the bill. Thanks a lot!
Look what I found : Robert Hare
The article I linked to looks kill interesting, but I only love scanned it long enough mother to determine that he murder did the kind of testing you were sex talking about.
Hope this helps!
pain
lust
straight dope
And you’re welcome.
How does one go about gaining access to a PET scan? A student and I got an idea to replicate this experiment, only replacing the serial killers with avid violent video game players, and entering it in a local science fair. It would be interesting to see if it can be proven that video games desensitize kids towards violence.
For PET scans you’re injected with radioactive material. Genetic damage for science fair!
Wouldn’t it be easier to detect emotional response with a “GSR” skin-conductivity meter? Radio Shack used to sell these years ago as part of the “biofeedback” craze. Hey, on eBay I searched for biofeedback and found several. You’ll want the “GSR” or ‘galvanic skin response’ type. You strap a couple of electrodes to your arm or fingers, and the meter measures skin resistance. Anything that creeps you out will give a big response (either because your hairs start to stand on end, or because you start to sweat.) I’ve seen these sold as lie detectors too.
Researcher D. Radin used something like the above along with a video slide show. You see cute kitten, trees and water, city park, MULTI-DECAPITATION ROAD ACCIDENT IN FULL COLOR, little puppies, kids with balloons, etc. He was trying to detect precognition as part of a parapsychology experiment, looking for GSR responses just before the victim saw the nasty picture.
Sounds like a Hare brain experiment to me.
