Name the puppy (pics, too!)

Hey! Who you calling weird? I have a dog named Weezer.

dahfisheroo, the puppy made me think of a Jackson Pollock painting. I’d call her Polly.

Fiona or LuLu

I cannot wait to get back to the 'states so I can get a dane and a pony. Soooo jealous.

My ex named one of our foster puppies Little Shit once. That was fun to yell at a dog park. My next dog will be called Sulla (as in Lucius Cornelius).

Beer is also a fun thing to name a dog after. I’ve owned a Heineken and met an Amstel.

Wow what a cutie. I have always wanted a Great Dane and I would name her Daphne from the Scooby gang.

A cute Dane story: A few summers ago I met a Great Dane puppy (still as big a horse) that had figured out how to operate the ice dispenser on the fridge. Whenever it got too hot he would just get some ice to eat. Things got bad when he also figured out how to open the oven door to see what was making those wonderful smells. Well at least if he burned himself on the oven he could get himself some ice to cool it. J

Why, she’s kewter than a speckled pup… Wait… That’s what she is.

The coloring reminds me of froth or lace. How about Lacey?

That’s one cute puppy.

There is only one apropriate name for a huge danish (= norse) dog, and that is Fenris.

She’s a girl, so Tycho won’t work as a name. You don’t want a gender-confused dog

I suggest Sophia, after Tycho Brahe’s sister and assistant.

I also like Ophelia and Moondoggy as names.

Hmm…

Merle–>Haggard–>Hagia Sophia (Brahe)

My wife saw the pics, said “she’s gorgeous. She looks like Cookies ‘n’ Cream Icecream. He should call her cookie.”

So you should call her Cookie, or I will get in trouble.

If you do want a female musician, how about Lida (Husik)?

I understand that Great Danes are unusually sweet tempered. It’s as if their size makes them the gorillas of the dog world–gentle giants.

Congratulations, dahfisheroo ! I’ve got a blue merle Great Dane puppy, too! She is 8 months old in these pictures- click on “Of Mice and Men” in this blog to see the pet pics. (I don’t know how to link to a single picture on this page). Shelby is very easy to train, and rarely gets in trouble. She is a Good Girl who loves her kittah.

Thank you for mentioning that you’ve had shelter dogs in the past, and you’ve had Danes before so you know what you’re getting into, so I feel that my work as a dog rescue weirdo is done and I can now coo with abandon and a clear conscience.

Great Danes are magnificient! And the merle Danes are so fantastically pretty. I was working our pet adoption day a few months ago in a PetSmart and two different customers were in at the same time, both with merle Danes – one a puppy, one full-grown. They were so awesome!

I have no cool name suggestions. I’d probably go with Scooby-Doo, just because the creator of said animated legend, Iwao Takamoto, died this week. Takamoto would be a good name, too… pretty unexpected for a Great Dane.

Congrats!

Aren’t they the same thing?

I’m trying to get a couple of good names, and we’ll make the final decision after we get her, just like you did, Caridwen.

Beaucarnea, I am amazed at the similarities in coloring between the two dogs, even to the patches of white, and the socks.

Keep the suggestions coming folks.

Puppy! How about Bitsy? Short for Elizabeth, as inElizabeth of Denmark, daughter of King Frederick I of Denmark and Sophie of Pomerania.

here is what I came up with while watching Lemony Snicket’s Series
Akira, Alchemy, Alexia, Amaretto, Ambrosia, Athena, Brandy, Bijou, Brie, Cashmere, Chaya, Cimarron, Finn, Fleur, Isis, Kiku, Kona, Miko, Oreo, Onyx & Pipa

I thought exactly the same thing-- she looks like Oreo Cookies 'n Cream ice cream. And soooooooooo cute!

I have only seen one other blue merle in my area- an older male with a very similar pattern. Shelby gets a lot of attention- a giant blue dog is a pretty rare sight. I am sure you will love your new puppy and her silky ears.

We adopted Shelby from a family who had too many pets to care for and reported that she was destructive and not house trained. They also complained that she would run towards the road each time she was let out. Her previous owner was so relieved when we took her that she cried.

Good news: Shelby came to our house at 5 months old, and house trained herself- she has never had an accident. (Grossness alert: she barfed in the house once, but in the toilet. I don’t know how to explain that one. I was alone in the house with her and I heard her toenails on tile, heard her cough, then a splash. Gross, yes, but a cinch to clean up.) I hung a bell beside the front door and Shelby rings it when she wants out. Another bell hangs beside the pantry, and she rings it for a cookie. She does the same thing for the cat- if Libby is at the door, Shelby rings bell to alert me. If Libby waits by the pantry, Shelby rings the bell for cat and dog treats. I walk her in an open field on a long lead, and drop the lead for most of the walk. She rarely roams more than a few yards away and comes back when I call.

Bad news: Shelby can reach the kitchen counter, and does so when no one is looking. I sanitize every surface before I cook. She is clumsy, and bumps me hard enough to leave bruises pretty often. She has rammed me when playing a few times, and would knock a small person down. She is fearful of strangers, and barks like a rabid coyote if someone knocks on the door, but will calm down and greet a visitor if I tell her she must.

Care and feeding: Shelby’s ears and tail are natural and she will be spayed next month. She eats 5-6 cups of food per day, a little more if we exercise a lot. She gets a small rawhide each day, and a Kong filled with treats, crackers, and peanut butter just before I leave. She has a little anxiety when she hears keys or catches me brushing my hair or putting on make-up, but she knows she can look forward to her Kong. Shelby is too big for any dog beds, and sleeps on a futon and frame. I keep a fitted full size sheet on the futon for easy cleaning. She willingly takes baths, and sometimes requests one. Shelby already outweighs me, but I keep my role as boss by refusing to let her get on the bed (she doesn’t even ask) and I face her with a threatening posture and a loud “no” if she gets too nosy in the kitchen. I stay very calm around her, and try not to encourage roughhousing. She is very good with my 6 year old nephew and 11 year old niece, but too large to play with them.

My experience with her has been completely different from the reports of her previous owners- other than the twice daily rips through the house, she is a very good dog with a sweet and loving disposition. Proves that the behavior and personality of a dog can sometimes be attributed to the owner.

All and all Shelby is a terrific dog, and I am crazy about her.

I will try to get some video of her this week-end to share.

Freckles

I love how the Blue Great Danes look. Great Danes are so hard to find down here in the Bahamas.

If your dog were a male you could name him:

Askum.
When someone says, “What’s his name?”
You say, “Askum!”
