Name the puppy (pics, too!)

For wordsmiths with a sense of humor, no better place than the 'Dope to find the perfect name for our new Great Dane coming at the end of the month. Looking forward to reading all of your great suggestions.

Pictures of her now, and an picture I found that is close to what she’ll look like when she is an adult. Damn thing is going to be bigger than me, and give my big guy of a husband a run for his money.

Disclaimer

I have looked and looked at Humane Societies, rescue shelters—all my other dogs have been rescue mixed breed dogs, this is the first I’ve ever bought from a breeder. The rescues want outrageous prices for adoptable dogs ($410 for a mixed black lab at 5 months old for example, nice dog, but that was crazy.) I grew up with Danes, and have wanted one for a long time.

Wow, that might be the cutest puppy I’ve ever seen.

My mind of course travels toward Hamlet, but then here’s a list of “great Danes” I kind of like Tycho. Or Ole Worm.

I have nothing to add except for SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

How 'bout Ophelia?

Claire Dane(s).

Damn. She’s adorable. I’ll bet she smells like a puppy and I’ll bet she has a round little puppy tummy. I want to pat her tummy!

Pokey! After the great literary figure

Seconding Ophelia.

Or Spot. It’s such a little name for such a big dog, yet still accurate. I like irony in dog names - my pugs always get big fierce names like “Butch” and “Rambo”.

Harlequin dane right? I say name her after Harley Quinn, one of Joker’s hench women.

I think you should go with “Tiny” or something. “Squeak”, perhaps.

Cute puppy.

Look like beautiful dogs. I would love to own one or two.

Moondoggy. Same coloration, and “dog so big it blot out the moon!”

No, the coloring is called merle.

Ooooh. Puppy breath yay!.

Paisley
Roxanne
Sonya

Then you should call her Obie after Merle Oberon.

I was thinking that or

Haggard the Horrible

my mistake :smack:

I’ve never seen a Dane with that kind of colouring before, it’s lovely.

I’d call her Cruella - she’s already dressed up in a dalmatian coat  - but then again, I’m a little inappropriate like that.

puppy envy

I’m weird. I always name my pets after famous musicians or bands.

I had a dog named Aerosmith, a bird named Dexter (after Dexter Holland, of the Offspring) and a fish named Noodles (after the lead guitarist from the Offspring). We’ve also had a fish named Metallica.

Unfortunately, I don’t listen to a lot of female musicians, so I can’t help you with a name, but if you like music, there’s one avenue.

Of course, you could always give her a Danish woman’s name. Greta, Mette, Anne, Lene, Inge… This could be just me projecting, though, since of the maybe ten Great Danes I’ve known in my life, two were named Greta and three Hilda (no, wait, two Hilda and one Hulda).

…and a male called Hans, after Hans Christian Andersen and his crazy-long legs.

She’s beautiful!

I had a name all picked out for my dog but it changed when I saw her. Sometimes you need to hold them and they name themselves.

My stepfather used to have Danes. He always named them after Greek and Roman gods because of their majesty.

Therefore, I submit: Hera.
