Name this book!. . . .please?

There have been a few threads like this. Perhaps we can post all of our book questions in this thread. Or maybe not. Here’s my “name the book” question:

It’s sci-fi. A writer goes back in time, so the story takes place in England in the 1800’s. There is a homunculus and the dogs of hell figure in the plot. I remember at one point the protagonist is poisoned so he eats charcoal.
I’m almost sure this book wasn’t a hallucination on my part.

That sounds like something an author named James Blaylock would do.
He even wrote a book called “Homunculus”…and most of his stuff involves time travel.

Are you into “steampunk”? (Sort of cyberpunk set in Victorian times). It would have to be him or someone like him.

Blaylock is a good guess, but I think that’s Tim Power’s “The Anubis Gates.” It’s the back in time element that differentiates it, but I do recall the charcoal scene (it’s on page 188 of the paperback edition).

Yes! The Anubis Gates! That’s it! Thanks.

I love you guys.

Hmmm…how many books about homunculi are there???
I suppose that will be a question for another day…
