Name this dissident

This rebel was responsible for a major revolution that had a major impact on the entire world, either directly or indirectly. You’ve all heard of him, but most of you probably wouldn’t recognize his name.

He was active in the counter-culture and spent a lot of his time hanging around with criminals, prostitutes and other lowlifes and social lepers.

During a time when many were advocating the overthrow of the establishment by violent means this guy was talking about peace and love. The majority believed that his methods of passive-resistance wouldn’t amount to anything and placed more faith in the success of an active insurrection (which failed because of infighting between many rival factions.)

This dissident made spectacular claims and openly spoke against blind obedience to authority and tradition. The religious authorities called him a heretic and a liar and many were furious about what he said. His organization was attracting so many followers that the government realized he was a threat to their safety and wanted him killed.

So, who’s the dissident?

Jack Kerouac
