I’m no expert, but I think “jerkin” would probably be the word in English, though that usually implies leather, I believe.

*Jerkin *is right - they aren’t necessarily leather. Ideally worn over the doublet (jacket), but can be worn over just the shirt.

Yeah, but no self respecting medieval person would be caught dead in that. And these are people who walked around in pants with none of the essential pant parts.

I wonder if WhyNot was momentarily confusing Mr. Roper (Norman Fell) and Mr. Furley (Don Knotts). Mr. Roper’s clothes were pretty normal and boring, while Mr. Furley’s were quite flamboyant (he erroneously considered himself a ladies’ man).

Yep, I think I was/am.

Sorry, I was born in '74.

Oh yes they were. I distinctly remember one that my Mom (an accomplished home sewer) made for my Dad that he wore WELL into the 80’s. I’m pretty sure Mom tossed it out of despair that he still insisted on wearing it.

What Mr. Furley is wearing is a “groovy vest”. Just the thing for trying to score at the Regal Beagle.

I can’t decide whether to applaud you for your efforts in the fight against ignorance or mock you for your ownership of a Three’s Company DVD. :stuck_out_tongue:

A Three’s Company DVD? I’m guessing he has six seasons’ worth.

Isn’t it a jerkin?
