Name this temperature fluctuation related concept

There is a more general concept that has been applied to space heaters. They turn the element on until the temperature is a 2-3 degrees above the target temperature, and then turn it off until the temperature is 2-3 degrees below it. The idea is that this saves energy as compared to keeping the element at some constant temperature. Does anyone remember the more general name behind this idea?

Tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon!

You may be thinking of hysteresis.

Yes, thanks!

It’s also called deadband.
