Name this theory!

There is what I think is a theory in science that basically states “The laws of physics now are what the laws of physics always were and always will be” (you can change “physics” to any science you choose). Or you can say something more specific like “The speed of light is X, it always has been X, and it always will be X.”

This is (I think) used to figure out/prove the validity of all sorts of things like carbon dating, plate techtonics, the date of the universe, and lots of fun things like that.

Anyway, does this theory have a name? Is this even a theory, or is it too vague to be catergorized as such? The best name I can think of is Universalism, but apparently that’s not right.

Any help would be swell, is swell, and always will be swell!

“Dogma.”

The principle of uniformity.

Also known as uniformitarianism.
