James Roark’s photo of Dodger Rick Monday saving the American flag from being burned at Dodger Stadium won him the Pulitzer Prize in 1977.
I believe it was nominated but did not win.
The incident occurred at Dodgers Stadium on Sunday 25 April 1976 — 4 years to the day before I graduated boot camp from MCRD San Diego.
It was the middle of the 4th inning and the Cubs had just taken the field, with Monday in Center Field.
