Names you think are cool that you would never name your kids

“Crap Nelson.” I would never name my kid Crap, and my last name ain’t Nelson, but that just sounds like a really cool name. Say it out loud. Crap Nelson. I like the way it goes together.

I also think “Chick” would be a really cool name for a guy, but everyone I’ve told that just laughs at me.

I’ve always liked the old Hebrew name “Asher” but I think junior high could end up being murder on the kid. (“What’s up, Asser? Where you going, Asser?”)

My girlfriend and I were talking last night, and we decided that you name a kid “Marlboro,” he’s destined to be an ass-kickin biker. Or a cowboy. Or just made fun of.

“Brick” is another name I think is really cool, but just wouldn’t have the cajones to give to a kid.
Any others?

Aristotle. It just flows, man.

Zebulon. Jezebel. Delilah. There’s some great Old Testamant names that I just couldn’t give my kids. Although if I ever have triplets, I’ll be giving serious thought to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

Ali Babi Dadi Otis.

I used to know a dude named Chick.

I like the Indian names for some of our creeks. I used to joke that I would name my daughter any of the following:

Fannegusha
Atchafalaya
Otoucalofa
Chickasawhay
Hickahala
Homolochitto

… you get the picture

I remember a play reading I attended where the male lead’s name was “My Honey”. The only reason I wouldn’t nickname my son that would be because of the eternal explaining.

That play had a lot of good names in it… 15 cool points to anyone who can id the title and playwright.

Polk County
by Zora Neale Hurston

How about the name Zora?

My BROTHER’S name is Chick. (OK, it’s a nickname, but if you ask most members of my family what his real name is, you get a blank look.)

 does he live in CA ?

For a girl, I’ve always thought that Xanthe would be a beautiful name, but I’d hate for people to think she was named after the fantasy book series (Xanthe means ‘fair haired’ in Greek).

Nope. It’s not that uncommon a nickname - see Chick Corea and Chick Evans, for famous examples. In my family, there are two Chicks (male) and one Chickie (female). Their real names are Frank, Frank and Francesca. The nickname is similar to Cisco (from Francisco) in Spanish, but in Italian the first “c” is pronounced “ch”.

I always thought Willow was a beautiful name, but I thought it might be a bit much. So I went with the more “common” name of Ivey.

I am indeed planning on naming any future son Brick.

Names I love but probably won’t use?
Phoenix - I love the symbolism, but it seems overused.
Betty - I love this name, but it’s far too old ladyish now.
Aretha
Pearl - same reason as Betty
Sappho
Maggie - but if I name my children Maggie and Brick, that’s just mean
Hamlet
Ophelia

“Amadeus”. I just like the sound of the name, but I probably wouldn’t choose it; what if my kid turns out not to have the love of God? “Amadiablus” just doesn’t have that ring to it!

Good job, Earl. I saw the first reading they did of it after they dug it out of the LoC; my father’s from Polk County, so he wanted to see/hear it.

The only thing about Zora is that it’s a name I would actually seriously consider.

I love the name Sebastian for a boy, but outside of Europe he’d just get his ass kicked. I think Ariadne (air - ee- add - nee) is a beautiful (Greek) name for a girl, but everyone else I have ever mentioned it to says “yuck!”

I knew quite a few little Sebastians in NZ. usually shortened to Bas.

I like Amadeus too and when I mentioned it to my mother, she seriously thought we should use it. And the woman works in early childhood ed, you’d think she’d have a clue ;). She was also keen on Ambrosia.

Beefy, for a boy. And before you laugh, put it with your surname…HOW cool is THAT!!!

K

chris72, I know a couple of Sebs, if you don’t like Bas.

I’ve always liked Y’air for a boy…but not in Ireland methinks.

I like Padraig (Porrig) for a boy, but know they’d end up as Podge.

I’ve always liked Wolfgang for a boy, but nobody I’ve talked to likes it.

For a girl, I like Bronwyn or Bronwen but it doesn’t sound good with my surname(Brown.) Same goes for Barthelemew or Bart. Or Beatrice or Beatriz.

I also like Eowyn and Arwen, but that would make me too much of a LOTR geek, which I’m not.

I like many of the names of greek gods like Hesphaestus, Apollo, Dionysus and Zeus, but I wouldn’t give my kids those names. I would consider Athena or Artemis for a girl though.
