Since Kubrick wrote the screenplays for several of his films himself and was credited as screenwriter for most of the rest, the comment is just plain stupid.
Agreed. Oh, and he had more Oscar nominations as screenwriter than he did as director, not to mention more nominations from the WGA than from the DGA.
