Naming movie sequels.

Actual called “Porky’s II: The Next Day

The first movie sequel to use a number in its title was Quatermass 2 (UK, 1957), released in the U.S. as Enemy From Space.

Whoa! Vuja de!

And it’s sequel: The Madness of George III II.

Let’s not forget The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (which according to IMDB was just “The Naked Gun 2½” in Canada), and Naked Gun 33[sup]1[/sup]/[sub]3[/sub]: The Final Insult. (No “The” on the latter, for some reason.)

I remember this being said too, but last time I mentioned it, everybody told me I was just imagining it.

Well, you were. I was there -=- Star Wars didn’t have that “A New Hope” subtitle until years later.
But it is true that Lucas said he wanted to do a series of nine films – he said that when he was doing the very first sequel.

Oh and sequels should definitely not be named using some sort of cutesy punnery - Look Who’s Talking Too, for example.

I meant the nine films thing - I’ve accepted that my memory of the first film being called ‘Episode IV’ is a false one.

Citizen Kane II: Rosebud’s Revenge

I think that Roger Ebert pointed out the silliness of a film sequel titled The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter."

And next month, Elizabeth: The Golden Age is to be released as a sequel to Elizabeth, the 1998 film starring Cate Blanchett. I just wish the new movie were called Elizabeth II.

What about Apollo 13? Shouldn’t they have released the first twelve movies first?

I’m still waiting for the release of Malcolm Y.

That would be Malcolm XII actually.

Did they make a Malcolm XI that I didn’t see? I followed the franchise up to that point, but I thought they stopped before that.

I wasn’t expecting an expert on the Malcolm franchise.

OK, I’m trying to find out what happened to Malcolm XI but there doesn’t seem to be much information out there. I’ll report back when I come across a reliable and authoritative cite.

Die Hard II’s actual title is just Die Hard 2. The “Die Harder” thing was actually just the movie’s tagline. But it always gets slapped on the video/DVD case so close to the title that people assume it’s part of the title.

The same with Evil Dead II. The box shows “Evil Dead 2” and then the “Dead By Dawn” tagline.

Would Independence Day count, since the marketing campaign shortened it to ID4?

It almost amazed me when I bought the Star Wars DVD last weekend that when I watched the original version of the film that there was no Episode IV “A New Hope” on top of the crawl. When Lucas meant the original version, he apparently meant it.
