I have three days coming up in Naples, Italy (as opposed to Naples, Florida). I will definitely be doing the touristy tour of Pompeii. There are many other things to see and do, but I only have three days. If you’ve been there, I’d welcome guidance on the best of the rest.
I liked Herculanium much, much better than Pompeii. Yes, it’s smaller, but it’s much less crowded, better preserved and generally nicer. If you have the chance, take the boat to Capri, it’s gorgeous in the late spring, but I’m sure that it’s nice all year. Great shopping (jewelry, perfume, anything involving citrus front). There is a chair lift to the top of Anacapri which was one of the most beautiful places that I’ve ever been.
For food, Pizzeria Brandi, the original pizza place (or so it calls itself) is excellent. Naples itself is a beautiful city very good for strolling. There is a national art museum, can’t remember the name, that I truly enjoyed, although the ancient erotic art exhibit can be skipped entirely if it’s still there.
If you want any more info, I’ll see if I can’t find my travel journal from when I was there in 2001.
The archaeological museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale) in Naples has a lot of the stuff that was taken away from Pompeii and Herculaneum–including a famous mosaic of Alexander the Great.
