…well, perhaps that’s an overstatement, but Napoleon Dynamite is at least the most enjoyable movie I’ve seen in several months. I saw it at the Playhouse 7 about a week ago. The audience seemed divided between “Giggling so hard I can’t breathe” and “Staring unamusedly at the screen” camps; boyfriend and I were members of the former. There seems to be a similar rift amongst critics.
Jon Heder’s performance really makes the movie. There isn’t much of a plot, more like a series of tangentially related [and some completely unrelated] scenes which all share the common bond of being awkward, quirky and hilarious.
Anyone else seen and enjoyed [or despised] this movie? It’s getting a wider release soon and I’ve actually started to see TV spots for it. I’m not sure how well it will do; it has a PG rating, but is definitely not for children; the humor is the type that would be appealing to a rather limited group of people, and the TV spots I’ve seen don’t really do it justice.
