Nassau County Sheriff's Office (Florida)

For no good reason, I have begun a Wiki article on this organization. I found a few news stories. I have not been able to get to their web site. I have tried for a couple-of-three days, but no luck.

Is it possible they closed down their own website? What the heck kind of sheriff doesn’t have a web page?

What are your thoughts?

Works fine for me.

I had no problem reaching the site using your link. What exactly pops up when you try to go there?

My guess, they’re blocking practically the whole world other than the US. Probably got confused for the Bahamas so often, they got tired of it.

I have the same problem, Paul. Firefox reports ‘unable to connect’. Maybe my browser? Or what voltaire said.

What country are you posting from, if I may ask?

I’m in the UK but strangely I can’t even get to the site using the Tor browser which usually has no problem with geographically limited sites.

I can’t connect from the Cayman Islands using Chrome browser. I suspect geographic blocking.

I can connect no problem from Canada.

When I guessed “practically the whole world”, Canada was why I said “practically”.

From France.

But why? It’s not as though people are going to be streaming videos from them in the wrong regions.

I dunno. Paranoia? Or, a less virulent version, extreme network security? If you’re never going to have any business with any country other than the USA, why would you accept connections from them? It’s not like a county sheriff’s department cares about their international PR (since they could realistically decide that the entire idea of “international” has nothing to do with them).

Really, “why” questions often don’t have rational or sane answers.

It may not come up often, but county sheriffs do have business with other countries.

Again, I was just speculating… but I’ll point out that facts often don’t have any bearing on security-related decisions, so my theory isn’t really invalidated by that.

Since Nassau is the capitol of the Bahamas, and its two primary industries are tourism and being an international offshore banking haven, I imagine that the Sheriff’s office of Nassau, FL was having to deal with complaints, lawsuits, warrants, etc. from tourists and money-seeking people all over the world requesting all sorts of related legal actions from the law enforcement in Nassau. Easiest way to put an end to all that? Shut the door on all the traffic that is much more likely to be seeking to contact the island nation’s authorities.

Thank you all. I suppose it is because I am in Saudi Arabia.

There’s also a Nassau County in New York state–right next to NYC (Long Island). Confusion with FL?

Incidentally, I just moved back to Nassau County, FL, so I’ll keep my eyes open and if you need something “done,” I’m your mutt.

OK, it is up to you folks to flesh out the article I started.

On their website is a section for submitting questions and comments, so I asked about this policy yesterday morning and have yet to receive a reply.
