Police officers do have poor relations with black people (and the mentally ill). Why is admitting to institutional bias a sign of being anti-police?

This isn’t all that surprising. I don’t think Hillary Clinton herself has been particularly antagonistic toward the police, but democrats and left wing activists have protested police conduct in high profile cases. Of course they had a point, but the police, not eager to change their culture, have probably felt that the activists are taking the sides of victims and are less protective of law enforcement’s interests. It’s unfortunate, but I don’t see police departments, most of which are still accountable to the general public and public servants, getting toxic like Wayne Lapierre, I probably won’t lose too much sleep over this. It was clear early on that Trump was going to appeal to the police more than his leftist counterparts.

I’d be curious to hear who you view as being Trump’s “leftist” counterparts.

Should you choose to respond, please bear in mind that to legitimately wear the label “leftist,” one should ideally be on the “left.”

Just looking at her website, lots of things seem to imply that she thinks police generally are racist:

African American men are far more likely to be stopped and searched by police, charged with crimes, and sentenced to longer prison terms than white men found guilty of the same offenses.

Acknowledging that implicit bias still exists across society—even in the best police departments—and tackle it together.

Supporting legislation to end racial profiling by federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.

Strengthening the U.S. Department of Justice’s pattern or practice unit—the unit that monitors civil rights violations—by increasing the department’s resources, working to secure subpoena power, and improving data collection for pattern or practice investigations.

The highlighted portions seem to be criticism of the whole institution, not just the worst officers. YMMV.

Police deal with a lot of people who aren’t criminals, actually. But it does seem easy to forget that.

They do very rarely shoot the non-criminals.

Because it is a criticism of the whole institution, and not invalid. It’s the kind of criticism the police need to be able and willing to take on board: Implicit Bias is a thing and it needs to be addressed.

I am not a woman, but I support women’s rights. I am not an incarcerated criminal, but I support penal reform. I am not a Muslim, but I support freedom of religion. Even though none of those promise to enhance my own personal convenience or fortune.

I would like to think the police would support things that are good for the republic and the commonweal, and not just that which is good for their own private personal interests. Democracy serves a nation only insofar as the citizenry can look beyond ways in which the system can be manipulated for one’s own personal gain.

Police Unions are not “the police” The union has to support things that are good for the police in general. If I was the policeman’s union, I would vote for Trump. Hillary couldn’t even be bothered to fill out their questionnaire. I mean WTF???

40% of police officers abuse their families (compared to 10% of the general public). And many people who are dealt with by the police are low level criminals. Traffic violators, drug users, the mentally ill, the homeless, people suspected of misdemeanors or non-violent felonies, etc.

Very few people are serious, remorseless criminals.

Life is not black and white. Cops are not all brave heroes fighting against sociopathic gang members. Reality is more murky.

Its a shitty job and it takes a lot o character not to become a shitty person when you have such a shitty job.

And yet Clinton didn’t do this.

Look, there are good unions and bad unions. FOP is one of the worst unions out there. For all the grief AFT and NEA get, they don’t waste time defending members who harm those in their care. They don’t spend time threatening people who speak out against them. FOP is terrible, and police ought to disassociate themselves from this group.
