National Lampoon Magazine

Whatever happened to National Lampoon Magazine. I haven’t seen one for quite some time. When (& why) did it stop publishing?

My fate keeps getting in the way of my destiny.

The National Lampoon corporation went through several changes of ownership a few years back and many of these owners made some bad financial decisions. The magazine was simultaneously suffering through a long period of declining sales. Basically, the present situation is that the current owners have decided that the main value of the company lies in licensing its name and collecting royalties from already produced products and ceased regular production of the magazine. However, they have to occasionally produce a magazine in order to retain the trademark. So about once every other year they will print an issue of old reprints and sell it with a minimum of fanfare.

For more details on the magazine’s corporate shake-ups, read If You Don’t Buy This Book, We’ll Kill This Dog by long time National Lampoon publisher Matty Simmons (ISBN 1-56980-002-2).
