Natural alarm clocks

Every once in a while, I get reminded of those “natural alarm clocks” one hears about. Since Christmas is coming soon, I was wondering – do they work?

For those who do not know what they are, they’re the alarm clocks that have a built in lamp and play various “natural” sounds. As you wake up or go to sleep the bulb brightens or dims accordingly.

Oh. OK. I thought you were referring to kids, or cats, or impatient bedmates…

I have a natural alarm clock that makes the natural sounds like rain, waterfalls, thunderstorm, birds chirping etc but it doesnt have a bulb. Sometimes it’s nice to listen to. I thought originally you were referring to your internal alarm clock.

Police whistle, racking 12 gage pump gun, car coming through the front window, all work just fine, why do you ask?

I have one of the ones that make “natural” sounds too, but I’m particularly interested in the light aspect of these alarm clocks. Right now, I wake up when the sun shines through my window. The problem is that I face west (and the fact that it’s winter doesn’t help either).

I know that it may just be a marketing gimmick, but I’d still like to find out more about them.

I have the sounds one, which I like very much. And the most delightful thing happened one morning. I always use the bird setting, which on mine has some very distinctive bird calls, very pleasant. It starts low and gets louder, repeating the same series of bird songs over about 10 seconds, I guess. One morning I just let it go awhile because I liked the sound. Then I finally turned it off and rolled over. A minute or two passed, and I suddenly heard one of the particular bird calls again. I sat up, looked at the clock…no, it was off. I listened, and I heard it again, exactly. It took me another few seconds to realize that a bird outside my window was imitating my clock! He had it down absolutely perfectly. He’d do the call, and then wait. Then he’d do it again. I felt really bad, because he was obviously trying to make friends.

I have one too, but the nature sounds are not capable of waking me up. Luckily? It also has a buzzer which works fine - sort of defeated the purpose of buying it though. :smack:
