Natural gas company vehicles with plastic funnels hanging?

The local gas company in the Philadelphia area is PSE&G (Public Service Electric & Gas).

For years I have seen their company vehicles (common autos like a Chevy Cavalier, not trucks) that have what appear to be ordinary plastic kitchen funnels hanging, wide side down, from the front bumper.

Any ideas?

Try again. PSE&G is a New Jersey entity. PECo Energy, now a part of Exelon, formerly called Philadelphia Electric Company was and is responsible for electric and gas distribution on the PA side of the Delaware, speaking for the suburban Phila market. The exception to this is PGW, or Philadelphia Gas Works, a municipal entity owned by the City of Philadelphia, responsible for gas distribution therein. The funnel trucks are sniffers, patrolling gas lines for leaks, IIRC.
