Ha!
There was some soul-searching in Israel in recent years when a bunch of Jewish teenagerswho’d emigrated from Russia were involved in nazi-related hate crimes.
Me, too.
At least they could have some damn elephants…
I’m just back from Thailand, and remembering some of Siam Sam’s previous posts about Thailand’s odd views on the Nazis, I kept an eye out. I do remember seeing a Hitler t-shirt at a market, and a t-shirt that I am pretty sure depicted Osama Bin Laden in a State of a Liberty pose (he appeared to be holding a lightbulb). I didn’t know what either shirt meant since I can’t read the language.
Damn Siam Siam, from your posts, there seems to be some pretty amazing choice in bars in Thailand. I’ll have to visit.
I can confirm this one. but due to the nature of the boards, and the questionable legality of the type of manga involved, will not provide a cite.
Hey, necrophilia’s where I draw the line, mister.
From the linked article, “It is thought to be the first organised neo-Nazi cell to be uncovered in Israel”.
Because, seriously, talk about a tough place to recruit Nazis.
You can’t even begin to imagine, heh.
I rather like this quote: “‘We don’t go through and beat the shit out of everyone. We check our information and make sure it’s true’.”
And when you show up for dinner at their Mongolian BBQ place you had better have your order ready when asked, or NO BBQ FOR YOU!
It’s not that people just don’t know because they were not paying attention in class, history is actively suppressed and “reshaped” here.
I don’t think one in a hundred Thais actually know that Thailand didn’t just roll over and let the Japanese take over (if they are even aware of that), but in fact declared war on the USA and Great Britain.
Just for the amusement of it, the appropriately named Thai band “Slur” plays Hitler.
Isn’t that how Mel Brooks got his start?
To be fair, they were pretty much strong-armed into it, and the Thai ambassador in Washington, the future Prime Minister Seni Pramote, refused to deliver the declaration of war. Said it was illegal and unrepresentative of the Thai people’s wishes. He stayed in Washington for the duration and directed the small “Free Thai” movement in coordination with the OSS.
But I remember watching a local TV news crew stopping Thais at Victory Monument and asking what victory it commemorated. They could not find a single person who knew. A handful guessed World War II, which was a hoot, seeing as Thailand was at least nominally a Japanese ally. (It marks a minor victory over France in which it got back a minuscule portion of the territory in Cambodia and Laos that it had been forced to cede to French Indochina earlier.)
Could be worse, I saw a monument in Rayong (South Eastern Thailand), commemorating the victory of Thailaind against the French in the Battle of Koh Chang.
The French sank two ships and nearly destroyed a third, with about 40 Thai sailors dead, while the Thai Navy scored zero, nada… bugger all (they did manage to drop a bomb in one of the French ships, but it didn’t go off) :smack:
A small update that’s related, but I’m not sure it deserves a separate thread: Nazi Chic is becoming all the rage here. And the Israeli ambassador is not amused.
(I have to admit, some of these really are pretty cute.)
That’s exactly how it started in Germany in 1930.
Makes me feel all weird for taking that speaker’s honorarium a few months back.
Et tu, Ronald?
That’s just beyond surreal. The Teletubby Hitler is the very definition of cognitive dissonance.
