Color pictures of Nazi Germany

Very interesting.

(WARNING: one of the pictures contains a nude girl)

I just thought I’d say that, while I appreciate the NSFW heads-up about the pic of the nude girl posing for an oil portrait, surely that pales in comparsion to the numerous images of swastikas, Hitler and sieg heil salutes in terms of what could get one in hot water for 'net surfing in a professional or public environment? (At least I fervently hope so!)

OK, who wants to Photoshop this one into Herbie?

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Actually, that’s a rather disturbing and depressing page. And a little surreal.

You’ve got a point.

But then again, anyone who clicks would know that they’re going to see swastikas.

Wow; they sure did have a thing for swastikas.

Who are all those guys I had to scroll through to get to the picture of the naked chick?

Yeah, and she was totally not wearing any swastikas, leather boots, carrying a whip, and may not even have been named Gretchen.

I’m not entirely sure why you think that would be the case. Are we afraid of history now? :dubious:

Anyway, that page is really fascinating; of course you see plenty of black and white photos of Nazi Germany, but somehow seeing them in such vivid detail and color makes it seem much more real; it gives you a strange sense of the bizarre grandeur of it all. Kinda makes me wonder what could have been if all that effort had been directed to some aim other than reckless hate and domination.

…And man, Hitler had a terrible combover.

If only he’d used his power for niceness instead of evil.

Um? Interest in Nazism is not interpreted as scholarship, at least not where I live. In case you don’t follow current events, a couple in New Jersey basically had trumped up reasons for the state to take their children from their custody because they named them after Adolph Hitler and Heinrich Himmler, and complained publicly when a bakery refused to put little Adolph’s full name on a cake. I happen to disagree strongly with that, but the fact is, overt interest in Nazism is likely to have strongly negative personal and professional repercussions.

It is history, and I do find it interesting. But as far as giving a “NSFW” type of warning, context-free images of Nazism is much more likely to cause problems for me than simple female nudity. I personally work with more than a few Orthodox Jews. Being caught with a pic of a woman posing nude for an artist – hell, even full-on hardcore porn – would probably not generate nearly as much enmity and possible filing of “hostile work environment” proceedings as having a page full of smiling Nazis at a rally up on my computer screen.

I think the best way to describe those are…

disturbingly beautiful
(also who else looked at all of those JUST to see the nude chick?..anyone?..just me?..oh…)

Bastards, yes. The sure did dress well though.

Kinda interesting in that, aside from the picture of the tank in a semi-battlegroundish looking area, there isn’t much that would give a history-ignorant observer pause. Just a lot of guys standing around in brown and black with red flags. Yet we of course know in the back of our minds what all that represents…

I saw these pictures linked from Fark.com, and I had precisely the same reaction. It’s spooky how much more vivid and recent it all seems when you see it in colour. Makes it all the more chilling and horrific.

I’m always struck by how much of a dork Hitler always looks. You just don’t expect the man who embodied the greatest evil of the 20th century to be such a…weenie.

I got to spend a few months in Nuremburg; I think I might have been to some of the places in those pictures. The parade grounds and the night shots look familiar. For curiousity’s sake, I kinda wish they had captions and locations. It would probably make it that much more disturbing, though.

Ilsa.

What I found striking was the grimness on the faces of the people in most of the pictures. There were very, very few where people were actually smiling.

There’s two, one about 1/2 way down of people lining a road, and another of a stadium that just show an incomprehensible number of people. Hitler must have been, like, 3 Obamas. I don’t think there’s that many people in my whole city. :dubious:

There’s one more of a tank that struck me for some reason; probably because I’m either seeing those in museums, B&W, or in a video game, not something that both looks “real”, and like it was in battle 5 minutes ago.

I think his other faults have been picked over sufficiently enough for me to note that… his pants sure pleat funny, don’t they?

Thank you for the link. Incredible photos.
I forwarded them to my 86 year old father, a proud veteran of WW2, and look forward to his take on them.

We are losing these men every day and need to preserve their historic stories.

Thanks again.

What’s with the lady in this image (blue jacket standing up in crowd of men sitting)?
