My husband, after 2 years in, will be leaving for his first deployment next May or so. We are expecting our first kid in February, which means that he’ll be gone for a lot of her first year. They are doing a location briefing type thing next week, where he gets to list his choices of where he’d like to be stationed. Is there anywhere online that I can look to find out which carriers will be going into dry dock next year, in hopes that he could be sent to one of those?
He’s also nuke, so there are a very limited number of bases that he can even go to. So far he’s just been going through training, so this is new to us.
From this page, you can jump to the home pages of each carrier in the fleet. Those pages will have the carrier’s mission.
Offhand, I know the Eisenhower is in drydock at Newport News. In fact, I think it’s getting refueled, so that may be of interest to your nukky SO.
Welcome to the Navy. I’m not a ship driver, so my info is coming from google and this site. So I make no claims as to the accuracy of the info, although it looks valid to me and it should give you guys a place to start when it comes to asking your detailer questions.
From the looks of it, the Eisenhower is a good bet… it’s Norfolk based and entered the Norfolk shipyards May 2001 for a scheduled 3-year overhaul.
The Vinson is a San Diego-based carrier scheduled for the Norfolk shipyards in late 2004.
The Roosevelt is currently in the Norfolk shipyards for an overhaul. Not sure of the duration, but my guess is a couple years at least.
The Reagan is still being built here in Norfolk and is due for commissioning in 2004 in San Diego.
Good luck!
Every Navy and Marine unit has the SNDL (Standard Navy Distribution List). It used to be a print document but now it’s a database file. The SNDL lists all units in the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and their Reserves. Since it’s now a computerized database file, it’s a simple thing to sort by type of unit (CV/CVN) and homeport. Check at the admin or personnel office of the current unit.
Manhattan: I actually found that link last night after a girl told me that her SO was on one of those ships. It gave me something to search from. I was kind of lost before that, and wasn’t really sure what to start looking for.
Flyboy: That site is really great. We’d decided on trying for the Carl Vinson, after seeing the first site, but for some reason, I didn’t realize that it was going to be going to VA for maintainence, which would mean a move to WA next year, and then a move to VA later that year maybe. That would be two completely cross-country moves in a year. I’m tired of moving! =) I’ll have to look into this more.
Monty: The people at the support office here never seem to know what’s going on. I’ve asked them about this numerous times, and they just shrug and tell me they have no idea.
Then don’t walk out of the office without speaking to a Chief Petty Officer or someone with higher rank. The Personnelman and Yeoman who worked in my section knew damn well what an SNDL was and how to use it. And if they didn’t know it, they knew how to go about finding out: ask the LPO (that was me).
